Occasional stays in both cities are permissible. Characters can leave the castle for up to 1 week without encountering questions or suspicion.
Dangers
Castle Thorne and Thorne's major cities are relatively safe. Bandits and thieves are found mostly in Nott and rural areas close to the forests and mountains. Beasts may also pose a danger in wilderness locations.
Overview
Thorne is a kingdom that occupies the northwest portion of Abraxas. It was the first to begin summoning people from other realms. With the strongest aptitude for magic of all the major territories, their military is a mix of powerful mages and magically enhanced soldiers. Intellect is prized above all else, and magic is the most well-regarded discipline. Thorneans will support the arts and sciences, as well, although these studies are frequently interlinked with magical learning.

General Information
Thorne is a typical monarchy with four major cities: the city of Castle Thorne, Borrel, Hayle, and Nott. Nott is a lakeside town, disillusioned with the monarchy. Hayle is an isolated city where Hayle University is located, a prestigious academy of magic. Borrel is home to Thorne's powerful navy. The city of Castle Thorne itself boasts the royal castle, as well as a surrounding town occupied largely by nobles and aristocrats.

◎ Magic
Academic Magic plays a key role in Thorne. While the majority of common citizens don't wield the powerful magicks of trained mages, they still rely heavily on small spells to perform chores, cook their meals, and otherwise go about their lives. Magic powers everything in Thorne. Because portals are frequently used - especially by the nobility and royal members - roads in Thorne are sparse and often neglected. There isn't much reason to waste resources when only the peasantry relies on them. The Arcana features heavily in Thorne, as well, particularly in Hayle.
◎ Crime
If you're something of a troublemaker, you might find yourself confined to Thorne's infamous dungeons. Try not to cause too much ruckus. Thorne doesn't take threats to the royal family or its power structure lightly, and the mages are more than powerful enough to subdue anyone who needs to be - or take care of them for good. Fortunately, you're unlikely to encounter unsavory punishments happening to citizens regularly. These things tend to take place away from where the nobility live.
◎ Terrain & Biodiversity
Thorne's forests are dense and lush, and winters can be harsh. While Borrel has the mildest climate, it still receives a light blanket of snow in the winter. Colder years have seen smaller lakes and ponds freeze over. Aside from the beasts mentioned, Thorne has its share of standard flora and fauna such as deer, wolves, foxes, and a variety of birds. Rats are common in Nott, but rarer in Castle Thorne. Insects tend not to be a problem except in summer. Common hardy plants grow in the winter while spring sees the usual array of colorful tulips, daisies, and peonies.
◎ Religion
Religion plays a minimal role in Thorne. Most Thorneans view the Gods as antiquated, and much of the information is lost. Names of Gods are never found in public books. Accessing such information is usually reserved for high-ranking mages, as the knowledge is considered dangerous in the wrong hands.
◎ Medical Care
Medicine in Thorne relies on healing magic and is supplemented with potions. The castle has many qualified healers who work in its infirmary. Standards and equipment in Hayle, Borrel, and Castle Thorne are high. Outside of the major royal cities, areas like Nott and smaller villages have less access to quality care. Potions can be expensive for the average commoner to afford, and lesser-trained mages may not be enough to heal more grievous injuries.
Daily Life
The Summoned reside in Castle Thorne. Life, for you, will be fairly plush. Fine wine and food are provided, as well as supplies for recreation like art and books. Since you're not expected to work, you can dedicate your time to studying magic. Previous Summoned before you have even negotiated a stipend for full-time students of magic. As long as you can demonstrate you're making progress and you've been there for a month or more, you'll have a bit of pocket money to spend. If you're not interested in being a student, you can do small jobs around the Castle (shelving books, gardening, organizing alchemy ingredients, cleaning the stables) to earn a modest wage.
If you're new, you might have to share your quarters with another, but once you're well-established at the Castle, you can seek a private room. You can request custom furniture pieces to better suit your tastes. You'll have to choose from Thorne's selection of styles and colors, but you won't need to pay for it. Only if you want something that's not in their catalog will you have to shell out your own gold.
There are a few drawbacks. While the new King and Queen have loosened restrictions, allowing you to travel where you like around Borrel, Nott, and Castle Thorne, you're still not allowed to formally reside elsewhere without explicit permission and are expected to return to the castle after a week or so. Still, if you're familiar with how royal courts operate and are skilled at maneuvering, you can open doors that are seemingly closed by working your way up the ranks. Why not reach out and see? The higher you go, the more your loyalties might be tested.
You can explore the smaller surrounding villages, as well, or go on a hike or a short camping trip. The people of Nott are always grateful to see one of the Summoned. The city around Castle Thorne has much to explore, too: beautiful riding trails, teahouses, bookshops, and even a black market on the outskirts where you might meet one of the curiously horned Draconae, who hails from the Nether. Just be careful what you buy from them. You'll have to exchange blood or saliva for a purchase.

Key Figures
Thorne is governed by King Rudolph Sidwell and Queen Lia Sidwell. They have two young sons, who are expected to be in line for succession. The Sidwell monarchy is a recent development, having overthrown the former King and Queen of Thorne and ousted the previous High Mage, Ambrose Rhett.
The new High Mage is Mace Hemmet. He's the one who performs the summonings and is responsible for overseeing all research about magic and the Singularity. You might need to seek permission from him if you want to go far on either topic. Though not always the most popular man, he holds more than a few keys to the institution. Working alongside him could grant you privileges and information.
If you'd like to talk to someone who has a different view of the royal family, you can seek out Lyle Vela in Nott. He's careful about what he says to newcomers, but you can earn his trust if you work at it. He'll appreciate anybody who lends a hand to improving the situation for the townsfolk.

The Singularity
Thorne believes the Singularity's power is waning, and that something must be done to fix this. To preserve the Singularity at all costs, Thorne has dedicated many of its resources to studying the ancient relic and its unique properties. Naturally, one can't discount the fact that the kingdom relies heavily on magic to sustain its economy and way of life. Their concerns over losing the Singularity have as much to do with that as it does about the world.
While you'll have the best opportunity to study the Singularity here, you'll need to earn the trust of those in charge. Knowledge of the Singularity can be dangerous in the wrong hands, and making the wrong moves can start an international incident. Once you've proven your capabilities, though, you may find yourself with an important assignment from the High Mage himself. Additionally, as a Summoned, you have a unique connection to it through the Horizon.

Status & Rumors
◎ Current Status
◎ Rumors & Incidents
At the moment, Castle Thorne is fairly quiet following the coup in June of 20,079. Despite the recent turbulence, officials are making great strides to bring calm to the castle. There remains an increased number of guards near the royal wing and where the Summoned's sleeping quarters are and the newly established King and Queen are heavily guarded.
Parts of Nott have been abandoned and are in a permanent state of disrepair after the attacks last year. However, important farmlands and landmarks have all been restored. Nott is also currently working on improving its infirmaries. King Rudolph, unlike his predecessors, has promised to unite Thorne. This includes providing resources to Nott where the city was once ignored.
Access to a unique sap is available to anyone who wishes to create potions or research its properties.
◎ Rumors & Incidents
Thorne has quite a reputation, though there aren't many Summoned left who were there from the beginning. Like any court, there's a lot of gossip and chatter, though the details are often lost or embellished. You can also see if somebody will fill you in on Abraxas's general recent history. Some things you might overhear include:
◎ The King's betrayal, having orchestrated the death of his niece to take the throne for himself.
◎ A series of abductions involving the Summoned, which led to the formation of the Summoned Conclave as a gesture promising that officials are committed to hearing the Summoned's needs.
◎ An influx of rifts and monsters from other worlds, though the impact to Castle Thorne itself was minimal.
◎ A devastating attack on Thorne's navy near Borrel, which lost Thorne the battle in the Badlands as a result. Some claim it was the act of the Gods. Solvunn denies direct responsibility, stating that the Gods protect the lands as they see fit.
Setting Details
The kingdom once claimed nearly the entire continent as its own. The landscape of Thorne consists of dense forests and high mountains with mild summers and cold winters. Because of the difficult terrain, most of the travel in Thorne takes place via magically conjured doorways that can instantly transport people from one location to another. Thorne has a rich history and is renowned for its collection of books and extensive record-keeping, as well as its prestigious universities.
General
◎ Social Structure
Various nobles hold power on the royal council or as the heads of smaller cities. Authority is almost purely inherited and it is difficult to advance in social class unless you demonstrate some extraordinary aptitude. While the royal family has changed before, it has only happened a handful of times in Thorne's extensive history. The current ruling family stepped up to rule Thorne after the previous monarchs were mobbed and executed for failing to stop the rise of the Free Cities.
◎ People & Culture
Although the population is mostly divided between the nobles and the peasants, there is a small middle class as well. Thorne's economy is extremely insular and sharing wealth, skills, or knowledge with other territories is forbidden. The demographic makeup changes depending on which city you visit. Many peasants occupy small towns and villages scattered throughout the land. Thorne is highly traditional. Outsiders are rarely invited to gain citizenship in Thorne. Some families have lived there for generations and are still not considered full citizens. The fact that some of the summoned outsiders are offered citizenship has caused quite a stir.
Major Cities
The major cities of Castle Thorne, Hayle, and Borrel consist of those of some wealth or status. Nott, meanwhile, has a higher rate of crime and poverty.
Castle Thorne (City)
The castle and its city are where the royal family and their council reside. Most of the best mages in Thorne eventually end up here. Highly traditional, there is a long list of customs to be followed in Castle Thorne, lest you be considered rude and undignified. Although Thorne in general takes the Arcana signs more seriously than the rest of the world, this is especially true in Castle Thorne. Expect to have your sign considered in matters of work, marriage, and even friendship. Being invited to live in the castle itself is a great honor many ambitious mages strive for.
◎ The City
◎ The Castle
◎ The City
The City of Castle Thorne, sometimes referred to simply as "Castle Thorne", is officially the capital of Thorne. It boasts the second-largest population of any city in Thorne. Even the poorest residents (usually servants) of the city are somewhat wealthy compared to the territory as a whole.
A variety of shops, taverns, and market stalls can be found in the castle city. Bookstores are especially popular, selling all manner of novels, magic textbooks, and notebooks. Of course, serious students of Academic Magic will want to study in the castle's library or Hayle's universities, but many mages can get started on their journey using self-taught books.
Located south of the city are moderately sized farms where wheat and other grain are grown and processed. Due to Thorne's harsh winters, their grain stores are of great importance and are heavily guarded. Those who own these farmlands, which are passed down through generations, tend to be of some status and wealth.
Hunting is also a popular pastime for nobles and aristocrats. Hunting grounds are available, but these are enclosed spaces cultivated for hunting. There won't be anything dangerous here beyond small predators like foxes. Deer, elk, rabbit, and more are available to hunt for those who want to try their hand.
The borders of the castle city are well-guarded due to it being home to some of the most powerful and important people in Thorne.
◎ The Castle
A towering monument to the abilities of magic and man, Castle Thorne rises above its capital city like a pale gray beacon. High-walled and many-spired, the castle is the seat of Thorne’s ruling family as well as the most prominent mages in the kingdom. The castle boasts a plethora of well-maintained gardens. Beautiful flora and statuary can be found all around the castle proper, as well as magically created water features and even a few abstract sculptures that look as though they’re made of light. Some gardens are more private and secluded than others.
There are various free-standing smaller structures within the walls, devoted to various purposes. Quarters for groundskeepers and perimeter guards, gardening equipment, magical pursuits, the royal stables and horse-master's quarters...there’s nearly as much outside the castle proper as in.
The castle itself is divided into four main wings and several towers. The architecture is intricate and detailed, with natural patterns and curling designs worked into the stone and the wooden accents on doors and window frames. Elaborate balconies dot many of the upper floors, offering a view of the city below and forests beyond. The highest towers are home to the most powerful mages in the castle. Their doors are most often locked.
In the center of it all is the throne room itself, from where the King and Queen reign - at least during court hours. A high-ceilinged room often filled with members of the court and royal guards, it’s one of the most elaborate chambers in the castle, boasting complex stained glass windows and an intricately carved ceiling. The two thrones sit on a raised dais at the far end of the room, draped in tapestries embroidered with the royal couple’s signs. Aside from members of the court, an audience in the throne room is by advance request only.
- North Wing: Devoted to the Summoned, multiple bedrooms have been set up with four canopy beds and trunk space to match. There’s also a dining room that offers a variety of fine food at any time of the day or night and a grand library filled with epic tales and legends of Thorne’s history. For those curious about magic, a study hall is available to observe and practice the local magic. A communal bathing chamber is also provided, with shared bathing and a few private baths in the back. The shared baths are pools of various sizes and depths, with water constantly flowing down into them from slits on the wall above.
- East Wing: The domain of the royal family and court mages, the East Wing is generally off-limits to most but those who reside or serve there. The great double doors that lead to the South Wing are well-guarded.
- South Wing: Holds most of the castle’s more public bureaucratic offices, the actual running of the kingdom tends to happen here. Various mages, officials, and public servants keep their offices and homes in the South Wing. This is also where one can find various works of art and relics on display. It’s a bustling section of the castle, with citizens and officials coming and going at all hours.
- West Wing: Houses most of the servants that tend to the castle and its residents. While the servants’ quarters and facilities may not be as fancy as what’s offered to the resident officials, mages, or even Summoned, they’re comfortable, spacious, and well-maintained. Servants within Castle Thorne live better than plenty of Thorneans in the surrounding town. They have their own kitchen, own lounges, and own bathing chambers.
Beyond that, there are plenty of rooms that don’t belong to a specific wing, parlors and gaming halls and indoor gardens for entertaining, a grand ballroom... All the sorts of rooms one would expect to find in a castle. Connecting everything is a myriad of corridors, stairwells, short halls, and more than a handful of hidden passages - primarily accessed by magic, though some old-fashioned hidden doors are hiding around the castle as well.
And of course, every castle has its secrets, though Castle Thorne’s may be harder to uncover than most.
Borrel
As the city with the warmest climate and most fertile land, much of the agriculture in Thorne takes place here, although important farmlands are also located south of Castle Thorne and around the northern part of Nott. Located southwest of Thorne on the Hydra Gulf, Borrel is the furthest city from the seat of power. It is home to both the kingdom's military and the most prosperous agricultural industry. Most high-ranking military officials live here, except those on the royal council. Traditionally, the second child born to the current King and Queen will live in Borrel. A jewel of a city and a popular holiday destination, its towers and spires make a picturesque skyline against the sea.

◎ Agriculture
The area north of Borrel is lush farmlands, the landscape dominated by sprawling fields of crops and animals. Either side of the road leading to the city is lined with neatly maintained fences, each property marked with a large sign proclaiming who owns the farm and what they produce. The Adalwine Wheat Farm seems to be the largest and most prosperous, and in late summer a long swath of road is dominated by towering wheat bales.
◎ Architecture & Sea Glass
The city itself consists of traditional Thornean architecture, though there's a predominance of clay used in building here that's not common elsewhere in the kingdom. Magically altered sea glass is a common material for decorative windows and garden decoration, some displaying elaborate scenes laid out in the impossibly thin and fragile colored glass. Much of it can be purchased at small shops and stalls throughout the city.
◎ Maritime Fair
The Maritime Fair is a newly established regular celebration that's held over 3 days, following the Nocwich weekend each month. The event celebrates Thorne's naval history. Visitors to Borrel can tour old decommissioned ships, participate in ocean fishing (or ice fishing, depending on the weather), and enjoy a variety of historical displays, trinkets, and food. A seaside inn is available on a permanently docked ship. The rooms are plush and cozy and free of charge for all Summoned. They'll also receive a small stipend for food and drink when visiting. Since they're afforded time off, naval soldiers will attend the fair regularly and may casually converse with visitors.
◎ Coastal Attractions
As a coastal city, one will find all manner of seafood and aquatic-themed attractions and offerings. As popular in decoration as sea glass is, it's just as popular in jewelry, dinnerware, and other trinkets. And the sea has even more to offer. Borrel is home to several healing spas, promising they harness the mystical properties of the sea to improve whatever ails.
The beaches of Borrel are where most Thorneans enjoy their summer holidays. Warmer than the rest of the region, with smooth stone and white sand-covered beaches and a promise of safe swimming waters, families flock to the shores in the hot months. Vendors take advantage and set up stalls on the beach, offering everything from handheld food to souvenirs to summer wear.
Another popular attraction is the migration of the Great Piscorum, a massive whale-like creature with a colorful fan fin tail and flippers. They come in a variety of colors and patterns, and the sight of them crossing the sea to the west is a majestic one. The migration can be observed from high points on the shore or, for a small fee, locals will take their boats out as close as is safe for a closer view.
Nott
Nestled at the edge of Lake Circinus, Nott was once the seat of the royal family of Thorne. Evidence of that former glory can still be seen in the old buildings along the northern part of the water, great stone structures that once hosted grand galas and entertained all manner of nobility and saw the raising of several kings and queens. Now they're the places where the politicians of Nott gather to govern the city. Luxurious homes have been turned into tax offices, meeting halls, legal courts, and the apartments of local politicians.
Nott has a higher amount of crime and poverty than any other city in Thorne, and the magic practiced here falls under Wild Magic. Citizens of Nott often feel neglected by the royals and are less traditional and more independent than the other Thornean cities.

◎ Old Nott & New Nott
Old Nott overlooks the harbor, where a great deal of the city's trade is done. Fishing and trawling boats are in and out at all hours and the fish market dominates the docks. Anything the lake provides can be found, though perhaps not as bountiful as might be expected. There's often day work to be found on the boats or in the market, but the pay is very low and there seem to be few opportunities for permanent work.
New Nott appears a great deal more industrial than the original portions on the shore. Here the city has been taken over by trade production. Woodworkers, metalworkers, stonemasons, weavers, wheelwrights - the list goes on. Considering that Nott doesn't seem to be exporting many goods beyond fish, it's an unusual amount of goods production.
◎ Population & Life
There's more to Nott than a casual glance would reveal. For every fisherman and furniture maker to be found there's a beggar or a pickpocket. Alleys in Nott aren't particularly safe after dark, and the streets during the day are dotted with panhandlers and vagrants. Go deeper beyond the markets and city squares and well-kept wooden houses and find sprawling slums. Cheaply made and rundown buildings with whole families sharing a single room, dirt floors, windows without glass or working shutters. The air is often thick with the scent of smoke from poor ventilation in winter and open garbage in the hot months.
Nott boasts a multitude of taverns, inns, and public houses, as the city is often a stopping place for travelers between other Thornean cities. It's easy to find temporary lodgings for nearly every budget - though plenty of establishments seem to charge extra for every little amenity. Particularly in the less expensive parts of town. And it may not be a wise idea to leave any valuables unattended or out in the open...just in case. Security, of course, is much more reliable in more upscale inns.
Considering their reliance on the lake and fishing, it's no surprise that many of the local dishes and street foods are fish-based, and citizens tend to favor practical, durable clothing designed for working life and keeping out the chill of the lake winds.
◎ Wild Magic
Magic is as abundant here as it is in the rest of Thorne, but not the precise and disciplined Academic Magic the greater part of the kingdom prefers. Instead, Wild Magic is the practice of choice in Nott, and one may even encounter mild criticism to outright disdain expressed for the magic practiced in the capital. The same can be said for Nottish sentiments regarding the royal family of Thorne - in taverns late at night, or around trash-bin fires in alleys, one may hear rumblings of displeasure and frustration at the current monarchy.
Nott is currently the only place where one can learn Wild Magic. It is not taught openly to everyone, and those who wish to learn will have to earn the trust of locals before they may find someone willing to give them lessons. Unlike Academic Magic, Wild Magic cannot be studied with traditional books - so finding a teacher is important.
◎ Local Government
The city guards are not forces from Castle Thorne but paid citizens who answer to the offices of the city Lords. The local government is comprised of six Lords - Lord of Commerce, Lord of Justice, Lord of Health, Lord of Agriculture, Lord of Representatives, and Lord of Knowledge. Each Lord (a gender-neutral term in this context) has a number of officials under them, handling separate aspects of Nott's governmental needs.
The main representative of Nott is the Lord of Representatives, Lyle Vela. Alongside him is the Lord of Commerce (Gelda Andren), Lord of Justice (Rorik Tam), Lord of Health (Giles Weson), Lord of Agriculture (Bilia Cottte), and Lord of Knowledge (Geoffrey Tharcey). The Summoned are most likely to interact with Lyle, who has the authority to oversee all representatives.
Hayle
As the northernmost city, Hayle is cold and dry for much of the year and has a large network of connected tunnels and magical portals to avoid outdoor travel. Hayle is also the height of the arts scene in Thorne, with plays being especially popular. Anastasia Rhett, the Duchess of Hayle, has almost as much influence over Thorne as the King and Queen themselves, and many people prefer to speak to her first.
A bustling metropolis, Hayle is one of the busiest places in Thorne and has the largest population. Home of the kingdom's most prominent and large university, and with a vast number of job opportunities, many citizens from both Thorne's central city and Borrel migrate to Hayle or have lived there at some point.

◎ Crystalline Architecture
Hayle is, with little room for argument, one of the most beautiful man-made places on the continent. Crystalline towers pierce the sky, glittering in soft colors and casting rainbows across the city. The series of delicate, partially translucent crystal tunnels that cover the city like a spider's web is unlike anything else found in Abraxas. They offer protection from the elements and extreme weather for citizens going about their business. Gold filigree and trim are prevalent and utilized in ways that defy the imagination. Gold as fine and thin as spun candy creates intricate patterns on windows or single-piece inlays of massive size decorate the walls of towers, etched with detailed designs. There's no doubt that magic built this place.
◎ Craftsmanship
As well as producing the world's most learned mages, magical items, and tools are produced in Hayle. Here is where one will find the latest in magical items, the rarest potion ingredients, the most exotic pets, and the finest spellcraft tools. Unique, hand-made arcana decks are highly sought after. One can even commission their very own deck, for a steep price, as well as enter museums where rare or historical decks are displayed.
Some of the finest magical craftsmen in the land call the crystal city their home. Those aspiring to learn arcane craft and production can find no better place to base their studies. Many venture to the city in hopes of an apprenticeship under one of the many masters, though such positions aren't easy to come by. Nonetheless, many who fail to claim one of those prized spots remain, settling for a lesser education and hoping to prove themselves. The streets are filled with shops and boutiques offering magical devices to improve daily life. Street performers utilizing magic can be found on many corners, delighting crowds with impressive displays.
◎ The University
One of the most impressive structures in the city, the Hayle University can be seen from nearly anywhere. Here, the greatest mages outside of those employed at the castle teach their ways. The curriculum is brutal, with those not quite up to snuff weeded out within their first year. But those who have the talent and dedication graduate with the greatest magical education one could ask for. Many high-ranking mages invited to live in Castle Thorne are alumni of the University. As with all prestigious institutions, attending the University requires a good amount of coin...and having a respected family name doesn't hurt, either.

Senior Healer
Abner is very old, thin, and stooped but surprisingly strong, with steadier hands than many much younger than he. He has short white hair and a trimmed beard, stern, sharp features with an aquiline nose and grey eyes. A fixture in Castle Thorne for many decades, he's one of the most experienced healers in the kingdom. Abner spends as much time teaching as he does at the infirmary. His apprentices all seem to be a little terrified of him. He speaks bluntly, but his breadth of knowledge earns him great respect. Despite his tough exterior and reputation for being strict with his pupils, Abner is well-versed in bedside manners and is kind but straightforward with patients. No one knows how old he is. He refuses to tell, often snapping that he's been doing this longer than you've been alive.
Allegra Nightwyn
Senior Astronomer
Allegra is a tall, curvy woman in her early forties who wears her hair in waist-length twists, tends to dress in deep, rich blues accented with gold, and (rightly) carries herself like a woman who knows she's the expert in her field. Practical, welcoming, sharp, occasionally impatient when she feels she's having her time wasted. She believes astronomy and astrology to be of equal significance when turning one's gaze towards the skies, and has very little time for students who would use their preference of one to attack or discredit the other. Since her promotion to senior of the department, she no longer offers lectures or teaching. However, she has been known to take the occasional student under her tutelage should they prove hard-working and talented enough. While many would consider her blunt, her friends know her to have a truly warm heart, and she is truly committed to helping those in the department achieve academic excellence.
Alys Barlow
Senior Chef
A short portly woman who keeps her dark hair tied back off her face in a tight bun. Often wears bright, cheerful colors but almost always is seen sporting an apron over them, oftentimes with the typical stains acquired in the kitchens. Has many laugh lines around her mouth/eyes and warm, dark eyes. Just as quick to smile as she is to give a stern lecture, Alys runs a tight ship in the kitchens of the castle, keeping everything running smoothly no matter the hour. While she is firm, she has the loyalty of those who work under her and is the sort to inspire and encourage all her people to do their best. She works hard to keep an entire castle and all its inhabitants fed. Despite her typically warm nature, everyone in the servant class knows better than to get on her bad side. Her temper, while rarely seen and slow to ignite, is legendary.
Assistants
Appointed Mages
Specializing in alchemy and herbology respectively, Olorel Miafaren (Oli) and Willan Rodi were assigned to Yennefer of Vengerberg to assist her in her everyday tasks around the castle. They would be familiar with Yennefer by name, as well as her basic duties. While their magic is fairly standard, they are nonetheless capable and studious. More details about both individuals can be found here!
"The Duchess" aka Essie
Garden Mouser (Cat)
Essie is a regular long haired calico cat. She takes her job of keeping pests out of the castle gardens very seriously. Sometimes you might catch a glimpse of a floofy tail hanging off the edge of a stone wall as she basks in the sun, but as a solitary creature that prefers the twilight hours, it's somewhat rare to spot Essie during the day. Those who manage to charm the beast might find her rubbing against their legs for pets, but beware! Essie uses her fangs and claws liberally on friend and foe alike. Magically inclined folks might notice minor spells for protection and cleanliness have been cast on Essie, the latter of which likely keeps her coat from getting matted despite never being brushed.
Ingrid Alcott
Enchantment Instructor
Ingrid is a middle-aged, diminutive woman. While teaching her dark hair is always perfectly kept in place and her clothing well-fit to avoid magical accidents. She holds herself in a way that makes her look far larger than she is. Outside her classes, her hair is let down and deceptively longer than it should appear, but she claims, with some amusement, that there is no magic involved. Accustomed to dealing with unruly students, Ingrid often ends up with the less-than-desirable ones in her basic classes who are having trouble with other studies. While having a calm demeanor, once students have moved up to her intermediary class, she has no trouble putting students in their places. Her favorite punishment is making someone act as a temporary teacher's aide for basic classes in a subject other than their primary focus. She is not easily shaken but outside of classes she is much more open, as long as you're not one of her students.

Works for the Gold Needle. A busty black-haired woman in her late thirties with brown skin and gray eyes. Famous for being able to make any color and style of clothing work perfectly on herself and others, she holds herself with perfect poise and confidence. Levianna became a sensation as a seventeen-year-old savant in the art of fashion design and was swooped up by the Benneesson family. She started working in one of their stores as an employee. Ambitious, sharp-witted, and even-tempered, her eye for beauty has led to her popularity amongst the wealthy in Thorne. Even people who despair ever looking their best can come out feeling wonderful. She also instills confidence in others. Wearing something personally designed by her will give you status - as long as you have the gold.
Madelline 'Maudie' Weber
Town Gossip
Tiny, moves quickly, talks even quicker. Always impeccably dressed, a lover of exquisite headscarves. Often compared to a small rodent. (It's the teeth, don't comment if you value your reputation.) Curious to the point of being nosy, she has a cheerful demeanor and seems to treat any moment of silence as a personal affront. Maudie knows all the freshest gossip and is especially interested in Summoned. She has a unique talent for making people tell her things while keeping up the impression she's the one doing all the talking. A regular at Winking Cauldron teashop. Not the greatest fan of tea, but the staff is pretty and gossip is juicy.
Malachi Hurst
Shop Owner
Malachi owns The Scrying Eye. He is a tall, slim man who appears to be in his mid-sixties. He is an impeccably neat individual who favors jewel-toned robes that he never allows to crease, and he can often be seen squinting through a pair of gold-rimmed spectacles that he'll hold in his hand but refuses to wear. His once fiery red hair (now mostly grey) is worn gathered at his nape by a cord of leather. Somewhat cantankerous, Malachi is the kind of shop owner who doesn't seem to want to part with his wares. He has extremely high standards for his customers and will not sell to those whom he deems will misuse the noble magicks of divination, and has refused to allow children into his shop following the "crystal avalanche" incident of ten years ago. He seems to have a one-sided rivalry with the mages of Thorne following his dismissal from a teaching post his youth — apparently, it isn't appropriate to deny students entry to his lectures because he "foresaw them failing his classes, so why bother."
Mildred "Millie" Whitleby
Shop Owner
An apprentice of alchemy, Millie also runs and owns the Winking Cauldron. Short, round, with dark-hazel curly hair, blue eyes, and a mass of freckles. Millie dresses almost exclusively in floral patterns. She's in her late 20s. Friendly, open, a little forgetful, a little eccentric but still very, very practical. Smiles all the time, talks a little too much. Loves food and juicy, juicy gossip. Hates mice. Orphan. Her height is a result of an alchemical accident in her early childhood. She does not tolerate people commenting on it. Anyone trying might soon find that this small, young woman has a mighty voice and a repertoire of wickedly creative insults.
Riory Bennesson
Shop Owner
Owner of both The Gold Needle and the Silver Thread. A man in his late 60s with silver-gold hair and hazel eyes. He is 5'8 and always impeccably dressed. He does seem to have a signature shade of forest green that he always wears in his many fashion pieces. His voice is deep and his smile charming. A talented businessman, his family has been in the fashion industry for generations. While he has no skill in visual design, he is an excellent tailor and boss. His father was said to be something of a tyrant in the fashion industry but he is far better liked and is known for fostering good relationships with other businesses and the castle. He will hire anyone who is hard-working and he is interested in learning about all the fashion from the Summoned's worlds. While a bit on the reserved side, he is very polite and will never be caught in a temper. He has no heir of his own so it is unknown who will take the family business over after him.
Roose Oxley
Gardener
Rail-thin man in his sixties. Shaggy brown hair and beard with shots of gray throughout. Weathered skin from a lifetime in the sun and calloused hands from hard work. Often wears unassuming, faded clothing; very good at disappearing into the background and passing unnoticed when on the grounds. Quiet and soft-spoken, speaks slowly and thoughtfully when you do get him to comment. Roose is easy to miss as he keeps to himself and is focused on his work, but the many gardens and beautiful outdoor areas around the castle are his masterpieces and artistic expression - which most wouldn't expect to come from someone so unassuming. Those who are familiar with the castle's servants know him as a staple around the place. Known for his wisdom and as an excellent listener, he's fondly regarded by many. Originally hailing from the farmlands of Nott, he has family back there to whom he sends part of his wages to help them through hard times.
Thevan
Shop Owner
Thevan owns the Dragon's Keep, a bookshop in the town of Castle Thorne. He's a short, stout man with a well-trimmed goatee and a thick head of brown hair. He's exceptionally passionate about his books and will be eager to help you find what you're looking for, whether that be a steamy romance or a thick tome on philosophy. So long as people wish to enjoy a good read, he will be delighted to assist you. He can occasionally be found around town reading in a nearby tavern or sketching birds.
Torygg Koval
Metalworker
Slim, tall, with amber-brown eyes and long golden hair she wears in a thick braid. Torygg has a beautiful singing voice that some people compare to silver bells. After an accident in her late teens, she uses a wheelchair and rarely leaves her workshop. Straightforward, direct to the point of sounding confrontational or even rude, Torygg knows what she wants and is not afraid to reach for it. She does not tolerate idle chit-chat and people who think they can tell her what she can or cannot do. She strongly believes in fairness, and the right of people to live a good life and have nice things no matter their social station or level of wealth. She loves roses.
Trey Hadley
Stablehand
Young man in his 20s, average height, lithe, and lightly muscled from his work with the animals and in the stables. Blond hair, blue eyes, mischievous grin complete with dimples. A bit of a charmer when it comes to horses and humans alike, Trey's a personable sort who always has a joke or a funny tale to tell, whether it's something he experienced himself or heard from someone else after a night at the tavern. He loves a good bit of gossip and seems to know everyone and anyone worth knowing around the castle and many in the surrounding town. Enthusiastic, he always seems to have a smile to spare and seems to employ just as much effort in having a good time as he does in a hard day's work.
Winonah Rusch
Senior Librarian
A woman in her early 70s with salt and pepper hair and thoughtful hazel eyes. She is of average height and has ink permanently stained on her fingertips. Winonah is a warm and enthusiastic woman who has loved books her entire life and spent it rising the ranks in the library. She was an apprentice there fifty years ago and is a fervent researcher and scholar. She treasures her job and takes her position seriously, cultivating an extensive library and having added to the collection herself over time. She knows exactly where every book in the library is.

Shaggy dark hair and beard of indeterminate color. Might be anywhere in age between his 30s-50s. Keeps his nails very long and is often barefoot. Tends to wear shabby, threadbare clothing. Despite his alleged living conditions, he never seems to be in bad health. The Bird Man of Borrel is a very real human man who seems to commune with the sea birds. Some people believe he was raised by the very same birds. It's rumored that he lives in the rocky caves along the less popular sections of the beach. Others have claimed to have seen him in his own massive nest on the same cliffs where his beloved birds also flock during mating season. He seems to prefer the company of his winged friends over human interactions. Generally irritable. Do not mess with his birds.
Aoife Shives
Merchant
Tall and busty, Aoife is as colorful as the sea glass that she designs, usually in bright shades of blues and pinks. She has short spiky red hair and a snub nose, her eyes a brown shade that almost looks red at times. Aoife has a family-run business that is old and reputable, and they've always been selling seaglass windows and mirrors to people. She is a very shrewd businesswoman who does try to upsell a great deal but that's because their business has, in her opinion, the very best there is to offer. She will not be sold short, and if you don't like it, you can go somewhere else. Many richer citizens go there because the name is recognizable and Aoife is well-liked. She is pleasant to talk to but it's hard to get to know the real her, as she's been trained from youth to be the perfect salesperson.
Batista Hank
Naval Architect
They are on the taller end with short dirty blonde hair and hazel eyes. They seem permanently harried and stressed, blaming other people for the occasional gray hair they need to pluck in their hair. They wear comfortable and loose-flowing clothes usually in light beige colors. Batista is one of the leading ship architects in Borrel, leaning more toward merchant vessels than naval, but they sometimes are tapped for the latter as necessity grows. They have a space down by the water that is filled with wood and ship-related tools and objects, and many, many large sheets of paper where they draw all their ideas down. They are said to have revolutionized the cargo designs for currently used ships but wave off any rumor put to them, never quite satisfied with their work. If you have questions about architecture or how ships are made, they are the person to ask, but you need to make an appointment.
Galiot "Gal" Crue
Shop Owner
Gal is of medium height and build and in his 30s. With brown hair and eyes, he generally appears like an average man, but his bright smile and loud laugh can warm up any room. He dresses nicely and favors blues and greens like the sea itself. Gal is the owner of the Nautical Net, a popular seafood restaurant right by the beach. He is the type of owner who enjoys getting out of the kitchen every day and chattering with the guests, sometimes awarding discounted meals or extra liquor to people who play along with him. He will specifically offer a free dessert to any Summoned who stop by, excited by having them there. He is a favorite among the locals by just being so very nice to everyone. His wife Pearl and his two sons Fisher and Caspian are often there presenting the image of a perfect family.
Sergeant Nill Marlon
Drill Sergant
Nill is 5'11 and pure muscle. He's been training from a young age and it shows. He has a lot of body hair and his actual hair is shaved short due to a receding hairline. His skin is a warm umber and he has a permanently broken nose. His eyes are watery blue and he is in his mid-forties. Nill is assigned to train recruits in the army. While gruff and burly, he has a sparkling smile and a deep laugh. The recruits he trains often come to regard him as a father figure. Although he is strict during training and pushes his people hard, he believes it makes them better soldiers. He listens to his recruits and treats everyone fairly. Nill is extremely loyal to both the crown and Captain Sidwell. He is a career soldier and does not approve of any questioning of authority.
Talia Wright
Naval Officer
Tall and nimble, Talia's covered in naval-themed tattoos and has five piercings on each of her ears. Her black hair is permanently in intricate braids. She is in her early 40s. She has a prominent scar across her right eye. With very dark skin and eyes, she can come across as severe in expression, but she loosens up when off the block. Talia has a spotty past as it is said when she was young that she was in a questionable naval group that may have been called pirates at one time. Having found her patriotism after being shipwrecked and doing soul searching, she turned it around and became a rising star in the Naval Academy. She is considered one of the best sailors that has ever been in Borrel, her shrewd knowledge of the seas around Thorne making her a standout. Whatever her past, she is now a passionate advocate for the navy. She is a regular volunteer during the Maritime Fair and offers one 'official' tour of an old decommissioned ship.

Placis Alexio
Shop Owner
Shop Owner
Aurallin is said to be one of the most beautiful women you will ever see, with long burnished gold hair plaited at the back except for two curls framing her face on either side. Her eyes are a hypnotic vivid shade of blue. She likes wearing different types of makeup to match whatever her elegant clothes are that day. She appears in her late twenties but has a long enough reputation in her position that it seems impossible she could be that young. Aurallin is the owner of one of the top Arcana deck stores in Hayle. She is serious and perceptive, curious and perhaps a little mysterious, although this could all be an act for her customers. She often has paint on her fingers from her work. Her smiles, though rare, often draw much attention. She loves Hayle and she is proud of her work. She will often help people pick the 'right' decks for them. She has a new lover every month who works at the store.
Placis Alexio
Shop Owner
A heavily bearded and portly man, Placis is overly loud due to hearing problems in his left ear after one of his unique birds screamed into it. He has bright red-gold hair and red-brown eyes to match. He often has visible bites and scratch marks on his skin but doesn't seem to mind. Placis is an exotic pet salesman. He is genuinely very passionate about his creatures. He can often be seen on his hands and knees playing with them or picking up after them without complaint. Because of his genuine nature, his animals tend to be the most social and comfortable with people on the market. He loves children and has five of his own, all little redheads who cause havoc when they come into the store.

Adamant Row is a fashionable area in the city of Castle Thorne that is directly owned by the Crown. It's rented or leased to various nobles who wish to live in the city full-time, but who are not important enough to be offered rooms in the castle, or don't belong to a prominent enough noble family to own their manse elsewhere in the city. Long and short-term leases are available. The houses are large and generally have a walled and gated courtyard, a few outbuildings (kitchens, guardhouse, etc), and gardens. Those who are leasing them are entirely responsible for the upkeep. Leases are traditionally renewed ad infinitum, as long as there's no misbehavior. Not the only such neighborhood in the city.
Dragon's Keep
Bookshop
Just north outside the main castle is a bookshop like any other, selling fiction, autobiographies, cookbooks, and more. The Dragon's Keep consists of wall-to-wall shelves and a spiraling staircase to a small upper attic containing rare first-edition copies of otherwise common books in print (or so it's claimed). All shelves are neatly divided by categories. Despite a large number of tomes, you'll find it easy to navigate. If you ask the shopowner, Thevan, he'll escort you up there, but don't make attempts to cross the rope on your own or you'll be scolded by a very short man. If you're nice and polite, though, you'll find Thevan responds with great enthusiasm and will go out of his way to make sure you have all the books you could ever want.
The Gold Needle
Clothing Shop
The Gold Needle is a fashion boutique with all the latest Thorne trends for you to look your very best and for a price get a personalized designer look. It may be a little expensive to get an outfit tailored to you, but what is more important, looking your best or having extra coin? You will be swept away in this beautiful and classy store and for their highest paying customer, you can settle in and have a glass of wine as they make all your fashion dreams come true. Be prepared for the latest ball or business meeting and let everyone know who should be the boss.
The Mute Lute
Tavern
Identified by the wooden lute with broken strings above the door, The Mute Lute is an unassuming, narrow, three-story building located off the city square, with small rooms available for rent on the third floor. The ground floor houses the bar, while the second floor has extra seating and a view below. The Mute Lute is the type of establishment that would be considered fancy in Nott, but here in the castle city, it attracts a working-class crowd. Despite its name, its tavern floors are well known for its music and dancing. Many would-be bards of all backgrounds consider it a kind of proving ground, as its crowd never holds back their critiques in the form of boos and insults if the entertainer isn't up to snuff. Laurel, the innkeeper's wife, is a tall, well-muscled woman who makes sure to keep the revelers from getting too rowdy. Mirella, the innkeeper, inherited the place from her mother some years ago, and her mother before her.
The Scrying Eye
Divination Shop
The Scrying Eye is an independent establishment in the center of Thorne that deals in all manner of arcane supplies and paraphernalia relating to divination magics. It stocks decks of Abraxan tarot cards, scrying bowls, mirrors, crystals, and components for spells that fall into the school of divination, such as powdered precious metals and gems. It also does a roaring trade on incense, candles, decorative silks, and other items required for creating an atmosphere conducive to divining. The interior of the shop is elegantly rustic and surprisingly minimalist — the owner does not keep plants or other such decorations — however, a closer look will reveal piles of papers, books, and other such clutter stuffed wherever there is space for it.
The Silver Thread
Clothing Shop
The Silver Thread is in many ways a contrast to The Gold Needle, and it is specifically that way as they are both owned by the same person. The Silver Thread is a larger clothing store that sells more medium to cheap garments that will be of use to the majority of Thorneans. You can often find deals here but they are never tacky, all the clothes are well made and will last much longer than the fancier options. You can find a wide variety of options for everyday use. While it is not the same as getting the expensive wear of its sister store, you can find lovely clothes here, but it gets snatched up quickly, so be on the lookout.
Winking Cauldron
Teashop
A small but cozy establishment that is by day a teashop serving various - sometimes pretty inventive - herbal teas with an assortment of sweets (mainly home-baked cookies), and a pub by night. It is located in the less wealthy part of the city, frequented mainly by the locals, and considered something of a curiosity for its unpredictable menu and eccentric owner. Excellent source of gossip. It doesn't have set opening or closing hours, as the owner and, until recently, the only staff member, Mildred is also an alchemical apprentice, so she closes the shop whenever she goes to lectures.
Recently acquired one additional, equally erratic, staff member in Kell Maresh who helps Mildred with running the shop in exchange for help in his alchemical studies. Mildred calls him the Grump for his perpetual scowl, but the shop does register double the usual number of female clients whenever he's behind the counter. This is the reason she lets him stay, despite being the most unreliable employee in existence. It has absolutely nothing to do with the fact that she may have potentially developed a teeny-tiny bit of a crush on him. None at all.

Eatery
The Nautical Net is owned by Galiot Crue and his family, and it is a popular restaurant right on the beach of Borrel. Boasting being the best seafood restaurant (debatable) in the area, they are in that comfortable space of not being so fancy they're snobby and classy enough not to be cheap. Brightly colorful on the inside and with portraits of ships and sea beasts, it has deliciously mixed cocktails with nautical themes. There are occasionally some popular local singers who will perform one night a week for ambiance.
The Pageturner
Bookshop
The biggest bookshop in Borrel, it is famous for having the most military and nautical options on the continent. If you ever had an interest in making war or going to sea, this is the place to get books about it. Any military strategy or history books in there may very well have been approved by the nearby leaders, but they are thorough all the same. It is in the middle of town so none of the sea air gets to the pages and it is well-organized and has fair prices. It is a great place to peruse if you have time or pick up a vacation book before going to the beach.
The Sea Reflection
Art Shop
Owned by the Shives family, it has a stellar reputation and it is popular with both the wealthy and the average citizen. While their sea glass is usually expensive, especially for the full windows or mirrors, they have regular auctions or sales for anyone to enjoy. People can find seaglass jewelry as well as home decorations. It is a very beautiful store on the inside with examples of every kind of sea glass and sometimes people walk inside just to look at it. They have sea glass chimes hanging at the door and outside that make all kinds of music.
Southern Farmlands

IMAGE
The rolling hills east of Borrel are some of the most fertile land in Thorne. With harvest season drawing near, fields of green turn to amber for the most plentiful of crops: wheat. One of the most vital resources for Thorne, especially through its harsh winters, the kingdom ensures the land is protected and harvest transports are tightly guarded.

Deep in the forests east of Nott sits Thorne's most profitable lumber mill. The sparkle of magically powered saws keeps the mill running at all hours. Although the land is owned by an aristocratic family, its residents are working-class. Workers have recently been restless and unhappy over their treatment following the rift attacks.
The Hare & Harrow
Inn & Tavern
IMAGES
Located on the east side of Nott, the Hare & Harrow is just your average tavern and inn, catering to the seedier side of Nott. It's clean and comfortable, appealing enough to travelers, but mostly frequented by regular local patrons. You can grab a pint of halfway decent ale or a serviceable meal for reasonable prices, and no one asks questions of you while you rest. Seven rooms upstairs are available for travelers, or else customers who got too drunk and/or decided to take some time with a friendly lady of the night.
The Hooks
District
Found in Old Nott behind the fish market, the Hooks are a handful of connected alleyways set in constant shade thanks to the high walls of nearby warehouses. A great shortcut if you want to avoid the chaos of the market, but confusing to navigate for anyone who isn't local, and you don't want to get caught in one of the many darkened dead ends.
Oks
Bookshop
Located in Old Nott. Known simply and affectionately as 'Oks', thanks to the broken sign on the front of the shop that's never been repaired. Squished between a perpetually closed shop and a locksmith, Oks has been around longer than most folks can remember. The owner is the ancient woman who is always behind the counter whenever it's open for business and hunched over some book, who goes by the name Old Red - presumably at some point a century ago her white hair had originally been red. Old Red seems to be half-deaf and doesn't mind loiterers in her narrow shop. The interior is dark and dusty, barely wide enough for four people to stand shoulder to shoulder, which would be impossible anywhere since there are shelves haphazardly standing in the way. Inside are thousands of old books, a lifetime's collection for sale or trade. The prices seem to depend on her whims or attachments, as do the hours the shop is open. While there are no magic books to be found there are plenty of romance novels, historical fiction, horror stories, and a smaller non-fiction section all the way in the back.
Soup
Eatery
IMAGE
A tiny hole-in-the-wall establishment that's nothing more than ten stools surrounding a counter with kitchen on the ground floor of a small building very close to the Old Nott harbor. Run by a widow Vigdis Kara, Soup specializes in a single dish: hearty hot soup with noodles served to all kinds of hardworking people of modest to moderate income. Mostly fishermen. Soup doesn't have fixed opening hours, those depend on the season. The first round starts a good three to fours before sunrise and goes on until she sells out, then another round in the late afternoon when the boats come back. Sometimes it opens during the day if the owner is awake or in the winter. The easiest way to find out if Soup is open is to check for a large, red lantern with the word SOUP written on it that hangs near the entrance. If it's lit, then Soup is open.
Thy Kingdom Come
Intimate Shop
"Thy Kingdom Come" is easily spotted due to its vibrantly colored storefront and glowing, moving magical signage. The windows are normally filled with displays of the newest magical innovation barely themed after whatever holiday is approaching or a just borderline acceptable reference to current events. The quality of the goods varies depending on what you're willing to pay for, but there is something for everyone and the staff is enthusiastic and friendly, uncomfortably so if one is on the shyer side. Yet they also pride themselves on being helpful and encouraging, making sure that everyone leaves feeling confident about one's purchase and abilities. They offer everything from sex toys to enchanted clothes to simple magical sex-themed novelties, as well as various forms of birth control, pamphlets on sexual education, and anything and everything needed for good sexual health regardless of one's gender and sexual identity.
There are rumors that they offer a calendar featuring paintings of the Queen's lovers in various states of undress, but no one has managed to get ahold of a copy. Yet.

Exotica Fauna is owned by the boisterous Placis Alexio, and is the finest store to buy exotic pets. He trains them himself. His pets are very good with people and children because he wants to keep his store's reputation high. Though costly, they're lifelong friends to anyone who buys them. Prices are not for bargaining. His store is large enough to have sections for feline-adjacent, canine-adjacent, birds, reptiles, and others. You can wander through and pet them if you want, but come too many times without buying, and you'll get a very stern look. This is a business, not a petting zoo.
The Illusive Deck
Arcana Shop
Owned by Aurallin Saga, this is the store to get the best crafted hand-made Arcana decks. It has a stellar reputation and can be expensive, but that's because the decks always work right. The store has several types of decks on display with interesting color schemes and uniquely painted symbols. Aurallin is at hand to help people pick out cards or decks, and seems to have an instinct about her for her customers. The store is perfumed with something light and tropical. There's a back room where she makes the decks.

Village
A quaint village outside of Hayle, Whitehill is an insular community established for many generations. Well-read despite their economic class, residents of Whitehill pride themselves on their magical knowledge used to help cultivate the Snow Petal, a rare flower that blooms only in their valley. Highly sought after for potions and elixirs, the flowers are carefully preserved and the potions made are sent to Castle Thorne.
