INFLUENCE ◎

Influence
Influence represents how well your character is known, as well as how developed an opinion people have of them based on their actions in their neighbourhood, city, territory and even beyond, if they make big enough waves. This system is designed to help both you and the mods gauge how NPCs are likely to respond to your character.

Influence is defined by the role characters play in the world (and/or the role you're hoping to have them play as you develop their story.) It is not a level-up system, and should not be treated as one. In fact, you can apply to reduce your influence if you wish, should that be something that factors into your character's plans.

Events and plots will rely on characters with influence on both ends of the scale. Having a low influence is not necessarily negative, and can even be beneficial. Low influence characters might have a higher chance at succeeding in espionage while characters with higher influence would be too recognizable. Conversely, higher influence characters might be able to open doors based on their reputation that would otherwise be closed.
Understanding Influence
What Influence Measures
Influence measures how your character is perceived among the NPCs and local population, for good or ill. Characters who earn enough influence might have their name spread to nearby city, while those who keep a lower profile might only be known around their neighborhood.

Gaining influence with a territory can mean things like the locals having a positive opinion of your character, shopkeepers offering discounts, or the local authorities trusting them more. Negative influence can land your character in hot water! It is currently not possible to play a character with largely negative influence above Rank 5, as they'll be deemed dangerous enough to be detained indefinitely. (A neutral or mostly positive Rank 5 with a few negative incidents is fine.)

Influence does not measure your character's reputation among fellow player characters. It's unlikely the natives of Abraxas will hear of what goes on between the Summoned. It also doesn't indicate how "well" you've been playing the game. Characters can engage deeply with the game's plot without gaining any influence, and influence won't guarantee success or failure with plots and NPC interactions - though it can sway outcomes depending on circumstance.
How to Gain Influence
Anything characters do that would get noticed by natives such as: interacting with NPCs, helping (or hindering!) during events, taking a job, committing crime or causing problems will increase your character’s influence - though it may not be considered positive.

Influence is typically gained for actions that are relatively public and noticed by the Abraxan natives. Characters who operate in secret may not gain much influence due to the nature of their actions even if they may have impacted the setting quite a bit from the shadows. Characters are also unlikely to gain influence for actions taken out of sight of the NPCs. Anything that occurs in the Horizon will likely go unheard of. Actions that occur outside of the character's chosen territory can spread home to their neighborhood, but whether it does and to what degree will depend on the action.

As influence increases, gaining additional rank will require more noticeable actions. Continuing to take on the standard quests or duties they're already known for will serve to maintain their reputation rather than adding to it. For example, characters at rank 6 will need to go out of their way to attract attention - intentionally or otherwise - outside their local area or city in order to attain rank 7.
How to Reduce Influence
Reducing influence is as possible as gaining it! Much like reputation in the real world, characters can fade somewhat from people's memories by keeping a lower profile for an extended period. This is useful for characters who gained a reputation they didn't mean to.

This also allows players more flexibility. Players who ranked their character up, but would now prefer to participate in opportunities that are largely open to lower rank characters, can apply to reduce their influence.

Rank gained will also play a role in how much a character's influence can be reduced. Characters who have reached the higher end of the scale (Rank 6-10) may need to wait longer to reduce their influence - and likely won't ever go back down to anything lower than a 3-5, unless a very long time passes.
What Negative Influence Involves
If your character is the sort to cause problems or maybe just wants to watch the world burn, that'll be noticed, as well. The influence system can also measure how much a character is disliked within their territory. Rocking the boat too much can lead to your character being imprisoned or worse.

Not to worry, though. While negative Influence will make an affected territory disinclined or even hostile towards your character, opposing territories are likely to take a different view. For example, causing trouble in Thorne is likely to get a seal of approval from the Free Cities, and a character with negative influence there may find they have positive influence in their new residence, if they are able to relocate.

Further, influence as a whole can include a combination of positive and negative actions - and may tip towards one end or the other as the game progresses. Players should keep track of their character's reasons for having the reputation they do.

Mods will also keep track of any negative attention characters gain, whether officially submitted or not. While we will not be formally recording if a character's influence is negative or positive on the tracker, keep in mind it is noted and will be applied accordingly where circumstances call for it.
What Each Influence Rank Means
☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆
Level 0: Everyone starts at this level. While the officials involved with bringing you into the world might recognize you, the average citizen on the street has no idea who you are. You keep your head down and your nose clean. In exchange, you can exist in this world unnoticed and unbothered.
★☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆
Level 1: Very easily achieved, even by accident! You're not from around here, and people can tell. Local authorities would've "seen you around," even if they don’t know anything about you. They'll probably give you a few minutes of time if asked. Expect curious looks from citizens who work or live close to where you were Summoned in, but not much reaction the farther out you go. You can still go about your life freely, with a blank slate.
★★☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆
Level 2: You've started putting yourself out there and making a little noise! Local authorities are looking at you a bit more closely and, if you've made a good impression, might be more inclined to meet with you and listen to what you have to say. Citizens in your neighborhood may know you as "the guy who did that thing." One or two locals might have enough familiarity with you to put in a good word if asked, such as recommending you to their neighbor as a reliable handyman or a baker of excellent cookies.
★★★☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆
Level 3: Maybe you've been helping out the folks who brought you here. Maybe you've just been out in public and meeting as many locals as you can. Maybe you’re that weird hobo that people have started pointing out to each other on the street. Whatever you've done, more people are starting to notice you. Your local authorities not only know your face, they have a sense of what sort of person you are and what you do around the city. If they like what they see, they may start reaching out to you now and again. If they don't, you might find yourself given the occasional warning. At this level, you can apply for citizenship where you live (but you don't have to).
★★★★☆☆☆☆☆☆
Level 4: You're really starting to make a name for yourself, for good or ill! The local authorities call you by your first name, and maybe even respect your opinion and what you have to say. Whether or not they agree, they're at least inclined to give actual consideration to your point of view. If you've been causing trouble, you may find yourself on the wrong side of the law. In either case, stories of whatever you’ve done to make you well known may start floating around your local haunts. Among the local citizens, your reputation's enough that folks might recommend your services or expertise to each other on their own (or warn one another about you, if you've been behaving poorly).
★★★★★☆☆☆☆☆
Level 5: You're pretty well known in your immediate area! You have a local reputation, and even if it doesn't extend across an entire kingdom, being known by your whole city neighborhood or small town is still pretty neat... unless you've achieved infamy. Individuals behaving badly this obviously and consistently will almost certainly find themselves imprisoned or worse. At this level, local citizens sometimes chat about you unprompted, and might vaguely recognize your name.
★★★★★★☆☆☆☆
Level 6: When you go out, you get noticed! You've probably done enough daring deeds and heroics for shopkeepers to be willing to offer discounts and special little perks. Strangers might buy you drinks. Your local authorities trust your opinion and likely expect your help when it's needed. There might even be some gossip about you around the neighborhood.
★★★★★★★☆☆☆
Level 7: You're a local celebrity at this point! Expect to be recognized as "that guy" when you go about your day. People know your face and name, and might stop on the street to point you out. Even folks in other cities or the far end of your territory have an idea of who you are and what you’ve done...though it may not be entirely accurate the further away you get. Chances are high you'll be granted a meeting if you reach out to officials - or they'll even reach out to you first.
★★★★★★★★☆☆
Level 8: Not only are you a local celebrity, stories and rumors about you are reaching beyond your territory. The world is starting to watch! And it’s well known that you have an "in" with local authorities. They value your opinion and aid, and you may be entrusted with important secrets and positions of leadership. You might even earn a title or public commendation.
★★★★★★★★★☆
Level 9: You’re practically a household name by now across the territory! You've definitely earned yourself a title. You're recognized and respected across your territory. People are writing songs about you and the local authorities rely on you. It's not all peaches and cream, though. Citizens of opposing territories now recognize you as an enemy, and free travel throughout enemy terrain is much more difficult when your face is so well-known.
★★★★★★★★★★
Level 10: You now have such a notable reputation that you are second only to the most influential figures in the world in terms of notoriety. You may be followed, worshipped, revered, feared, and actively targeted by your enemies. At this level, you have the freedom and power to achieve almost any goal you set your mind to.
Applying for Influence
You can request an update to your character's influence level at any time. Your character’s Influence level will be adjusted and recorded in the Influence Roster accordingly. How you approach the form depends on whether you're requesting to increase or reduce your influence level.
For Influence Gains
While minor supplmentary events can be handwaved, we typically want to see in-game examples of your character performing the action you're using for influence. For high ranks in particular, the threads should be somewhat substantial. Threads don't need to play out the act itself. Events can be referenced within another thread instead. For example, rather than writing a thread of your character literally selling a flashy invention to some local NPCs, you can submit a thread of your character revealing their new invention to a friend or telling them about it.

Both quantity and the action itself is important. A single noticeable action can rank your character up as much as a handful of smaller actions. In some cases, we may make a decision to incorporate events not included that'll help boost you to a rank you're requesting if what you've submitted isn't enough. We'll let you know if that happens. In other cases, we might simply ask you to try again. Don't worry if so! There are no consequences to not reaching the rank up threshold, nor is it a reflection of your activity or participation - it just means you need more actions that suit the rank you're requesting.
For Influence Reductions
Because reducing influence is about inaction, you do not need to link thread proofs, though you can do so if your character has done anything that'd help them rank down, such as cutting their hair, taking on a new disguise, or even moving to a new city. Time passing without any incidents (positive or negative) will be weighed most heavily.

When applying to reduce influence, please note how much in-game time has gone by since your character's last noticeable act. This includes acts that you may not have submitted for influence directly, but which would likely be noticed by the general public.

Each character in the game starts at Rank 0. To request an increase or decrease, fill out the form below and reply to the comments section.

Character Name: Sasarai
Faction: Thorne
Requested Rank: I don't know, for his first rank tell me what you think is appropriate!
Link to Quest/Player Plot Comment(s): Generally Sasarai has been traveling around Thorne talking to people and helping out where he can.

More specifically, though:

Protected Ambrose, which he explained to Jolene.

Channeled a protective dome to gather townspeople beneath. Being focused on keeping the barrier up meant he wasn't out there doing any fighting.

Character Name: Estinien Wyrmblood
Faction: Solvunn
Requested Rank: 4, based on the description, since he had direct interactions with the authorities, and has been active in the community.
Link to Quest/Player Plot Comment(s):
-Biggest thing is the council meeting he had with all of Solvunn's important figures, spilling the beans on basically everything and officially offering his services.
-The related conversation with Rowan.
- Generally, he's been working hard within Solvunn. Taking up residence in a local sheep farming family farm, Estinien and Himeka have been working hard to rebuild after the farm spent years suffering from neglect. He has also been working as an affordable and fast mail carrier between the settlements.
- Fighting ghosts and saving townsfolk in his imposing (but iconic) half-dragon form.
- He's the one that tried to assassinate Ambrose and also escaped and met with the Duchess of Hayle, which the council is aware of, which is probably relevant to his notoriety.

While Alucard did fuckall during Eifstide proper, he has been doing some volunteer work in cleaning up the graveyard using above human strength to help move the heavier rocks. So, localized weirdo way into dead shit.

- Herded some orphans during ghost times
- He's been nosing around investigating Mal's disappearance, including questioning some of the locals
- Generally has just been killing monsters/pests on the outskirts for pretty much anyone who can pay, and will equally sell parts to the local shops
- Possibly this thing but entirely depending on if word will eventually circle back to marlo about it

Character Name: Kylo Ren
Faction: Thorne
Requested Rank: 5?
Link to Quest/Player Plot Comment(s):

  1. Settling in: Kylo settled in to life in Castle Thorne fairly notably: publicly challenging a thornean swordsmith to a duel to win a sword as a prize; beginning his daily routine of training/sparring with the guards in the courtyard. At some point Jaskier wrote and began performing a song about him called the Lonely Mountain King, which honestly I'm just telling you about because it is a Gift

  2. Frostwurm Adventures: Kylo volunteered to supervise a team. During this event he thwarted an escape attempt; guided his team safely back to base after a cave-in; sought out other prisoners who had gone missing in the tunnels and rescued Kirigan after he was attacked by Mal and left for dead (later reporting the incident).

  3. Memory Transference: Along with aiding Ronan in his efforts to offer a slice of the Horizon in the form of an enchanted forest, Kylo offered to use his abilities to share the memory of his experience in the Horizon with Ambrose. He was granted permission and began experimenting with memory sharing/transference between the Summoned and Thornean natives.

  4. Townhall: Having decided it would be useful to pool resources, Kylo got Jaskier to help him gather Thorne's favoured guests for an evening of information sharing.

  5. Jailbreak: Kylo defended Ambrose from Estinien's attack during the jailbreak. Afterwards, he offered to share his memory of the experience to help Thorne piece together what had happened.

  6. Taskforce: During his debriefing, Kylo was offered command of a group of four Thornean mages, charged with keeping tabs on the rest of the Summoned and defending Thorne from further attack. Making use of his new position, Kylo set up a study in Castle Thorne to help the newly Summoned access the Horizon for the first time, also serving as a safely warded space for his own experiments and private conversations.

  7. Politik: Following discovery at Sam's picnic for peace in the Horizon, Kylo convinced Abigail Hobbs to return to the Castle, fetching her from Nott personally with one of his mages. He also informed Jolene that the Queen was responsible for Relena's disappearance, offered his assistance and discussed strategy during a private meeting.

  8. Eifstide: Kylo assembled Team Goth, gathering a group of the Summoned to go bust ghosts!!

rinwell: (Faintly Blushing)

[personal profile] rinwell 2021-11-14 10:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Character Name: Rinwell
Faction: The Free Cities
Requested Rank: Rank 1
Link to Quest/Player Plot Comment(s):
As a general rule, Rinwell has been trying her best to stay out of trouble and not get too much attention from folks at the Outpost, or guards in the city proper. However, she's definitely been a library nerd, showing interest in learning about the city, its history and culture, so may be better known by folks there.

During Eifstide however, she did help out thoe who were caught up in wraith attacks in Cadens, particularly fellow orphans and street rats, revealing her magical prowess in the process of saving others. However, facts tend to merge with fiction as they get passed along by word of mouth, and rumours of her actions have instead been spun into tales about a Nameless Girl With A Magical Book, rather than a Specific Mage Girl saving lives. (Rinwell is happy to let this lie, so long as things don't link directly back to her.) The street rat network is more likely to hold her in favour than any adult ones.
cointosser: ([ooc])

[personal profile] cointosser 2021-11-14 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Character Name: Jaskier
Faction: Free Cities
Requested Rank: 3-4?
Link to Quest/Player Plot Comment(s):

1. Jaskier began performing his music publicly basically since arrival in Cadens, where he frequents the streets, taverns and inns. He typically uses magic to emphasize his performances, with illusions that "act out" the lyrics.

2. There was an Incident outside Cadens where Ciri's magic blew his arm nearly apart... so there would have been multiple people seeing his bloodied, unconscious body being dragged back into town for healing. He also now sports a very large scar up his arm that he doesn't hide that wasn't previously there, and the desert may have hint of green vines that shouldn't be able to survive there, but do.

3. Jaskier began performing in public again after he was healed and able to hold his lute again. (Please note this thread becomes NSFW later down.)

4. During Eifstide, he and Rinwell explored the city streets and fought off wraiths while saving townspeople. (On-going)

5. Generally, Jaskier gets rich by making sure people KNOW his name, as any self-respecting bard would. He puts effort into making sure he is remembered for the way he looks, his name, and his performances. (There is definitely a song called Lonely Mountain King in Thorne that most people would have heard. You're welcome, Kylo stans.) He has been performing general ballads about the adventures in the Horizon he's had, but many of his songs are, of course, about Geralt of Rivia's monster hunting.

6. Off-screen, Jaskier has also began using the plant magic he gained from the Horizon to grow herbs and sell them for extra money to local shops and apothecaries.

Character Name: sam wilson
Faction: free cities
Requested Rank: anywhere between 3-4 (depending on how much marlo specifically has sway over influence rankings)
Link to Quest/Player Plot Comment(s):
i am unsure how certain things done in thorne will affect his influence in the free cities, but i went ahead and included it here.

>> frostwyrm volunteering from the very beginning ( here and here and here )
>> attending city hall to help coordinate and collect information among the summoned
>> helped group and coordinate the summoned through the portals to their various places, while trying to dissuade any more action being taken against the guards

>> organized a summoned party/bbq which led him to sharing information about what happened to relena with kylo

>> arrived and immediately went to meet with marlo to help create bonds between the summoned and the local government
>> offscreen and in general, sam's work has led him to doing a lot of general handyman/contract work/random tasks/helping out in his neighborhood, which has spread out across the city. he's good with his hands and has a decent amount of knowledge of modern technology, which has let him work as a kind of barter system with as many local business people as he can.
>> offscreen, he's been working with the landlady who owns the building he's living in with regards to saving a few rooms/different apartments as a kind of Summoned Dorm Home
>> collecting as many newcomers/new summoneds as he can to make sure they get settled/have jobs/are helpful members of the city of cadens, and that they have a place to stay
>> requesting and meeting with marlo when he had found out about the newly summoned because he wants to understand why and help fix this (if possible) through the laws/rules of the city and the people within

[personal profile] fourarmedandangerous 2021-11-18 08:49 am (UTC)(link)
Character Name: Goro
Faction: Free Cities
Requested Rank: 1
Link to Quest/Player Plot Comment(s):

As a four-armed, obviously inhuman giant, Goro tends to stand out in the mostly-human Abraxas wherever he goes. But after arriving he spent a great deal of time at the library learning what he could about Thorne, and Solvunn in preparation for what he assumes to be a coming war. However, he tended to be imperious in his dealings with the librarians, often ordering them to fetch him books and tools to help him read.

Later on, he heard rumours of underground pit fights in some of the seedier areas of Cadens. Wanting to test himself, he attended on such tournament only to find fellow summoned Cloud Strife the only meaningful (in his eyes) challenge. After making an impression waiting for the tournament to begin, he and Cloud began their match in an alleyway to a full crowd of spectators.

Following the undead attack on Eifstide, Goro took it upon himself to guard the Cadens cemetery to ensure that no more mist rose up from there and another attack was not forthcoming. However, a brief altercation with Alucard led to an encounter with a forewoman who was not pleased by Goro's actions, much to his frustration.

And finally, once it became clear another attack was not coming and Solvunn had formally apologized, Goro began exhorting the people of Cadens on the streets to demand greater action be taken, in the form of a delegation to Solvunn and a list of demands to curb its mages' use of death magic. He spends the rest of November drawing larger crowds who agree with his message, with word beginning to trickle out to the rest of the Free Cities as November draws to a close.
wiedzminka: (two.)

[personal profile] wiedzminka 2021-11-18 09:23 am (UTC)(link)
Character Name: Cirilla of Cintra
Faction: Free Cities
Requested Rank: one
Link to Quest/Player Plot Comment(s): Ciri's been offering her services around Cadens as a hunter and monster slayer, gathering materials for alchemists and apothecaries from the beasties outside the city. She helped fight the Eifstide ghosts as well; the thread focuses on the PCs but she was definitely out and about getting wraiths away from people and helping clear the streets. (Maybe any NPCs who saw her take care of them would be more inclined to trust her monster slaying services lol)

She also did some looking into the outpost where the newly summoned of Cadens are, for whatever that's worth. In all, Ciri isn't really trying to catch the attention of anyone too high up. She's uh. trying to lay low. even though she's not all that good at it... but that doesn't necessarily mean that as a player I want to let her get what she wants. :)

Character Name: yennefer of vengerberg
Faction: thorne
Requested Rank: 3/4 (?)
Link to Quest/Player Plot Comment(s):
- even when previously sent and kept in the dungeon and everyone she knew leaving the castle through the portals, yennefer goes out of her way to protect ambrose and stay behind in thorne.
- she meets with jolene after the jailbreak and offers as much information as she can, explicitly stating her intentions to help thorne understand the singularity
- OFFSCREEN yennefer then spends much of her time within the court itself - wooing courtesans, attending meetings between mages in the study rooms, getting to know the younger mages and those rising through the ranks, teaching what she knows of chaos but also picking up on what is known about the local magics, etc.
- she joins the tam of summoneds led by kylo ren to protect the townspeople from ghosts/spirits
- after spending time courting favor with the queen's inner circle and making a good impression on the outer edges of the queen's awareness, yennefer requests a meeting with the queen and is granted said meeting. yennefer then demonstrates her magic and expresses her loyalty to the queen, offering herself up for whatever plans the queen may have.
- a couple of days following that meeting, she is called back to the queen's audience one more, and yennefer arrives when called.

Link to Quest/Player Plot Comment(s):
Posting here because I was sick during the AC window and put it off✨
- Link helped out by fighting tirelessly during Eifstide, but he never returned the family heirloom sword he "borrowed" oops
- He frequently travels on horseback between the settlements of Solvunn, escorting travelers and transporting goods from Tertiary to market
- Settlers may notice that he doesn't talk much and keeps mostly to himself, except during mealtimes when he loves to pass out food and/or be invited in for dinner. But, he will also do literally any off-the-wall favor they ask of him (he's better at some than others). He is strangely great at fishing? LINK.

Character Name: Emet-Selch
Faction: Solvunn
Requested Rank: 1 or 2; whichever feels more appropriate!
Link to Quest/Player Plot Comment(s):

Emet-Selch has been working on fixing up a house that had been left unoccupied/abandoned (using magic to do so), and has been spending his time helping out at the library, also in that same log. (He has continued to do so, focusing his personal research on myth and legend.)

He also would have been present at Eifstide and - possibly with some prodding - would have been willing to help defeat the risen dead although I fell down super hard about actually tagging there.

Finally, his shoebill familiar has been popping up various places, including at the local hot springs, though that may not be easily associated with him specifically.

Character Name: Estinien Wyrmblood
Faction: Solvunn
Requested Rank: 5, or whatever is appropriate, I'm not sure how much this counts for.
Link to Quest/Player Plot Comment(s):
Estinien participated in three separate fights during the Dimming:
- His first battle against Yennefer, where they both did significant damage to each other but ultimately she escaped.
- Sasarai, whom Estinien went after following his battle with Yennefer, but was ultimately too wounded to break his defenses. Thankfully, Himeka came upon him shortly after and was able to take advantage of Sasarai's resulting exhaustion to take control of his casket.
- He defended Himeka from Goro when he attempted to steal the casket he'd claimed.
- Estinien returns to Solvunn severely injured and spends the rest of December recovering.
