INFLUENCE ◎

Influence
Influence represents how well your character is known, as well as how developed an opinion people have of them based on their actions in their neighbourhood, city, territory and even beyond, if they make big enough waves. This system is designed to help both you and the mods gauge how NPCs are likely to respond to your character.

Influence is defined by the role characters play in the world (and/or the role you're hoping to have them play as you develop their story.) It is not a level-up system, and should not be treated as one. In fact, you can apply to reduce your influence if you wish, should that be something that factors into your character's plans.

Events and plots will rely on characters with influence on both ends of the scale. Having a low influence is not necessarily negative, and can even be beneficial. Low influence characters might have a higher chance at succeeding in espionage while characters with higher influence would be too recognizable. Conversely, higher influence characters might be able to open doors based on their reputation that would otherwise be closed.
Understanding Influence
What Influence Measures
Influence measures how your character is perceived among the NPCs and local population, for good or ill. Characters who earn enough influence might have their name spread to nearby city, while those who keep a lower profile might only be known around their neighborhood.

Gaining influence with a territory can mean things like the locals having a positive opinion of your character, shopkeepers offering discounts, or the local authorities trusting them more. Negative influence can land your character in hot water! It is currently not possible to play a character with largely negative influence above Rank 5, as they'll be deemed dangerous enough to be detained indefinitely. (A neutral or mostly positive Rank 5 with a few negative incidents is fine.)

Influence does not measure your character's reputation among fellow player characters. It's unlikely the natives of Abraxas will hear of what goes on between the Summoned. It also doesn't indicate how "well" you've been playing the game. Characters can engage deeply with the game's plot without gaining any influence, and influence won't guarantee success or failure with plots and NPC interactions - though it can sway outcomes depending on circumstance.
How to Gain Influence
Anything characters do that would get noticed by natives such as: interacting with NPCs, helping (or hindering!) during events, taking a job, committing crime or causing problems will increase your character’s influence - though it may not be considered positive.

Influence is typically gained for actions that are relatively public and noticed by the Abraxan natives. Characters who operate in secret may not gain much influence due to the nature of their actions even if they may have impacted the setting quite a bit from the shadows. Characters are also unlikely to gain influence for actions taken out of sight of the NPCs. Anything that occurs in the Horizon will likely go unheard of. Actions that occur outside of the character's chosen territory can spread home to their neighborhood, but whether it does and to what degree will depend on the action.

As influence increases, gaining additional rank will require more noticeable actions. Continuing to take on the standard quests or duties they're already known for will serve to maintain their reputation rather than adding to it. For example, characters at rank 6 will need to go out of their way to attract attention - intentionally or otherwise - outside their local area or city in order to attain rank 7.
How to Reduce Influence
Reducing influence is as possible as gaining it! Much like reputation in the real world, characters can fade somewhat from people's memories by keeping a lower profile for an extended period. This is useful for characters who gained a reputation they didn't mean to.

This also allows players more flexibility. Players who ranked their character up, but would now prefer to participate in opportunities that are largely open to lower rank characters, can apply to reduce their influence.

Rank gained will also play a role in how much a character's influence can be reduced. Characters who have reached the higher end of the scale (Rank 6-10) may need to wait longer to reduce their influence - and likely won't ever go back down to anything lower than a 3-5, unless a very long time passes.
What Negative Influence Involves
If your character is the sort to cause problems or maybe just wants to watch the world burn, that'll be noticed, as well. The influence system can also measure how much a character is disliked within their territory. Rocking the boat too much can lead to your character being imprisoned or worse.

Not to worry, though. While negative Influence will make an affected territory disinclined or even hostile towards your character, opposing territories are likely to take a different view. For example, causing trouble in Thorne is likely to get a seal of approval from the Free Cities, and a character with negative influence there may find they have positive influence in their new residence, if they are able to relocate.

Further, influence as a whole can include a combination of positive and negative actions - and may tip towards one end or the other as the game progresses. Players should keep track of their character's reasons for having the reputation they do.

Mods will also keep track of any negative attention characters gain, whether officially submitted or not. While we will not be formally recording if a character's influence is negative or positive on the tracker, keep in mind it is noted and will be applied accordingly where circumstances call for it.
What Each Influence Rank Means
☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆
Level 0: Everyone starts at this level. While the officials involved with bringing you into the world might recognize you, the average citizen on the street has no idea who you are. You keep your head down and your nose clean. In exchange, you can exist in this world unnoticed and unbothered.
★☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆
Level 1: Very easily achieved, even by accident! You're not from around here, and people can tell. Local authorities would've "seen you around," even if they don’t know anything about you. They'll probably give you a few minutes of time if asked. Expect curious looks from citizens who work or live close to where you were Summoned in, but not much reaction the farther out you go. You can still go about your life freely, with a blank slate.
★★☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆
Level 2: You've started putting yourself out there and making a little noise! Local authorities are looking at you a bit more closely and, if you've made a good impression, might be more inclined to meet with you and listen to what you have to say. Citizens in your neighborhood may know you as "the guy who did that thing." One or two locals might have enough familiarity with you to put in a good word if asked, such as recommending you to their neighbor as a reliable handyman or a baker of excellent cookies.
★★★☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆
Level 3: Maybe you've been helping out the folks who brought you here. Maybe you've just been out in public and meeting as many locals as you can. Maybe you’re that weird hobo that people have started pointing out to each other on the street. Whatever you've done, more people are starting to notice you. Your local authorities not only know your face, they have a sense of what sort of person you are and what you do around the city. If they like what they see, they may start reaching out to you now and again. If they don't, you might find yourself given the occasional warning. At this level, you can apply for citizenship where you live (but you don't have to).
★★★★☆☆☆☆☆☆
Level 4: You're really starting to make a name for yourself, for good or ill! The local authorities call you by your first name, and maybe even respect your opinion and what you have to say. Whether or not they agree, they're at least inclined to give actual consideration to your point of view. If you've been causing trouble, you may find yourself on the wrong side of the law. In either case, stories of whatever you’ve done to make you well known may start floating around your local haunts. Among the local citizens, your reputation's enough that folks might recommend your services or expertise to each other on their own (or warn one another about you, if you've been behaving poorly).
★★★★★☆☆☆☆☆
Level 5: You're pretty well known in your immediate area! You have a local reputation, and even if it doesn't extend across an entire kingdom, being known by your whole city neighborhood or small town is still pretty neat... unless you've achieved infamy. Individuals behaving badly this obviously and consistently will almost certainly find themselves imprisoned or worse. At this level, local citizens sometimes chat about you unprompted, and might vaguely recognize your name.
★★★★★★☆☆☆☆
Level 6: When you go out, you get noticed! You've probably done enough daring deeds and heroics for shopkeepers to be willing to offer discounts and special little perks. Strangers might buy you drinks. Your local authorities trust your opinion and likely expect your help when it's needed. There might even be some gossip about you around the neighborhood.
★★★★★★★☆☆☆
Level 7: You're a local celebrity at this point! Expect to be recognized as "that guy" when you go about your day. People know your face and name, and might stop on the street to point you out. Even folks in other cities or the far end of your territory have an idea of who you are and what you’ve done...though it may not be entirely accurate the further away you get. Chances are high you'll be granted a meeting if you reach out to officials - or they'll even reach out to you first.
★★★★★★★★☆☆
Level 8: Not only are you a local celebrity, stories and rumors about you are reaching beyond your territory. The world is starting to watch! And it’s well known that you have an "in" with local authorities. They value your opinion and aid, and you may be entrusted with important secrets and positions of leadership. You might even earn a title or public commendation.
★★★★★★★★★☆
Level 9: You’re practically a household name by now across the territory! You've definitely earned yourself a title. You're recognized and respected across your territory. People are writing songs about you and the local authorities rely on you. It's not all peaches and cream, though. Citizens of opposing territories now recognize you as an enemy, and free travel throughout enemy terrain is much more difficult when your face is so well-known.
★★★★★★★★★★
Level 10: You now have such a notable reputation that you are second only to the most influential figures in the world in terms of notoriety. You may be followed, worshipped, revered, feared, and actively targeted by your enemies. At this level, you have the freedom and power to achieve almost any goal you set your mind to.
Applying for Influence
You can request an update to your character's influence level at any time. Your character’s Influence level will be adjusted and recorded in the Influence Roster accordingly. How you approach the form depends on whether you're requesting to increase or reduce your influence level.
For Influence Gains
While minor supplmentary events can be handwaved, we typically want to see in-game examples of your character performing the action you're using for influence. For high ranks in particular, the threads should be somewhat substantial. Threads don't need to play out the act itself. Events can be referenced within another thread instead. For example, rather than writing a thread of your character literally selling a flashy invention to some local NPCs, you can submit a thread of your character revealing their new invention to a friend or telling them about it.

Both quantity and the action itself is important. A single noticeable action can rank your character up as much as a handful of smaller actions. In some cases, we may make a decision to incorporate events not included that'll help boost you to a rank you're requesting if what you've submitted isn't enough. We'll let you know if that happens. In other cases, we might simply ask you to try again. Don't worry if so! There are no consequences to not reaching the rank up threshold, nor is it a reflection of your activity or participation - it just means you need more actions that suit the rank you're requesting.
For Influence Reductions
Because reducing influence is about inaction, you do not need to link thread proofs, though you can do so if your character has done anything that'd help them rank down, such as cutting their hair, taking on a new disguise, or even moving to a new city. Time passing without any incidents (positive or negative) will be weighed most heavily.

When applying to reduce influence, please note how much in-game time has gone by since your character's last noticeable act. This includes acts that you may not have submitted for influence directly, but which would likely be noticed by the general public.

Each character in the game starts at Rank 0. To request an increase or decrease, fill out the form below and reply to the comments section.

Character Name: Istredd
Faction: Thorne
Requested Rank: 1
Link to Quest/Player Plot Comment(s): Istredd can be seen by people at Thorne Castle at the library sometimes even sleeping there, he is often seen with a stack of books of the history of the continent. He also was at the Dragon's Keep and made friends with the owner. Istredd did the Thorne emergency assignment with Stephen Strange.

Character Name: Rhy Maresh
Faction: Thorne
Requested Rank: 2 or 3?
Link to Quest/Player Plot Comment(s):
- Rhy has been studying healing at the infirmary and found himself an apprenticeship there
- He organized a mingle party for the newly Summoned in Thorne, and has discussed with the castle staff the potentiality of having this every other month, since that seems to be the pattern.
- Cooperated during the Nocwich event (and did his best to dress and act well in representing Thorne during the stay there)

Character Name: Wanda Maximoff
Faction: Solvunn
Requested Rank: 3
Link to Quest/Player Plot Comment(s): Here is Wanda's player plot comment, which links heavily with both the little shrine trip she took with Himeka, Nero and Thor, and her time spent isolated in a small forest by the Primary Settlement. The Solvunn Council would have talked to her for the latter, and Wanda—despite being in the state she was—would have agreed to keep the enchantment to a small space, all the while trying to keep her magic at bay as to not disturb hunters, foragers, and shrine visitors. Additionally, upon her return, she slowly started reintegrating into Solvunn society, helping put together and host the Solvunn mingle to greet the newly Summoned and also host any of the native Solvunnites. At this point, she would be known for having helped improve the state of Gardsbruk Farm from the decrepit state it was at before, and would offer to help boost plant growth, heal farmland, etc using her magic for anyone who comes ask. Not to mention that she's also a pretty good babysitter — though she's stopped doing that in the past month for reasons of her own.

Character Name: Viktor
Faction: Free Cities
Requested Rank: 4
Link to Quest/Player Plot Comment(s):
After engaging with Axn Kade's work at the Libertas art walk, Viktor and Jayce inquired with the Academy about the condition of the mines and were invited to tour one. Following, they solicited volunteers and supervised the removal of old mining equipment in preparation for pitching safer technology and improved equipment to the government.

Viktor also presented some of his work to Aleksander and on his recommendation will be conducting research at the Grand Academy of Science. Plot engagement, log in progress (totally cool if I can't submit this yet because it's unfinished, but wanted to note as it technically took place early August).

Jo Harvelle

Character Name: Jo Harvelle
Faction: Free Cities
Requested Rank: (...whatever you think fits? I'm still trying to get the hang of everything for new game? 1? 2?)
Link to Quest/Player Plot Comment(s):
~ Jo's surname proceeds her as most hunters & Mag's Inn Residents have been through Harvelle's Roadhouse long before she got here; lending her some built-in Hunter History/Connections (as does coming from the same world & doing the same job as Dean back home)
~ Jo was a volunteer for Jayce & Viktor's mine project.
~ Jo went to Nocwich, expressly to make sure people would be safe in The Hunting Grounds and to be sure no one was taking advantage of those invited by lulling them in there. She went hunting several times, helping to keep people safe. She (Dean, & Geralt) got into a fight with Lucifer, which felled a very large tree and it/they should have been able to be heard for a good distance through the grounds. Jo, personally, slammed a crossbow bolt into Lucifer before he vanished. She won big at the Gambling Hall (but was very low-key about how often she showed up so as not to be pin-pointed as a problem). She, also, went to Lunar Pond, and took part in the blind tasting & the moon lanterns.
~ Also, she helped Nadine Cross (incredibly well-known girlfriend of FC Delegate Jaskier) find the perfect, fancy dress for the ending event she attended on his arm.

Character Name: Nero
Faction: Solvunn
Requested Rank: 3! or 2 if that's too manyies.
Link to Quest/Player Plot Comment(s):

- Nero was part of the memory event and willingly shared his experience during the event, albeit with some redactions. He also accepted gifts from the Solvunn people.
- Nero has been helping babysit and tell stories to the kids of the main settlement.
- He also drew up his own welcome brochure for anyone new to Solvunn. Yes, he still distributes them.
- He "helped" during the shrieking weeds quest and, despite their fuck-ups, they were victorious in the end.
- Was involved in the Entity event and melded his nightmare of the Qliphoth with others. His entity was eventually eliminated in the Solvunn ritual with Himeka.
- He started investigating the disappearance of a Solvunn elder and was not subtle about it.
- The investigation led to Himeka telling the farm family about her experiences in the woods at an altar. They go looking for evidence of "Vimorskas" or any other old god.
- Agreeing to make some sacrifices to an altar in the woods, Nero offers blood but is Extremely Misunderstood by Thor and ends up sacrificing an entire arm to the altar.
- He improved his brochure and helped set up the Solvunn gathering and met up with newbies to help them out.
- And finally, he went to Nocwich, got a cool fortune, participated in the Nightbloom, and cooperated with the Solvunn assignment.

Character Name: Jon Snow
Faction: Thorne
Requested Rank: 2? (If you think this merits 3, that’s cool, but I doubt it does.)
Link to Quest/Player Plot Comment(s): In the time that he’s been around Thorne, Jon would have established himself as calm, helpful, and very skilled with actual weapons — if also pensive and brooding in demeanor. He cooperated with Thorne leadership in the memory share event, assisted with the moth hares, participated in the ritual to dispel the nightmares (note: I am almost completely sure that I had another comment somewhere that mentioned that he would have been very visibly brave and determined about seeing the ritual through and not breaking the circle, but I can’t find it!), and he placed the tarot card at the Nightbloom party as directed, using his fire spell to warm the card. If he is given a task, he completes it without a fuss, and will always seem quite set on doing so: in places where he doesn’t have natural talent, he seems bent on succeeding through willpower. He also probably comes off as a person who wants to be able to do more than he’s been doing.

Link to Quest/Player Plot Comment(s):
  • Steve participated in the ritual to stop the nightmares during that event, assisting with crystal collection and the ritual itself.
  • He spoke with/investigated the military, both to try and get info about what would be done with the crystals, as well as to ask about their increased activity.
  • He participated in the art walk and explored Libertas (one, two, three).
  • He volunteered with clearing out the mines, as organized by Viktor and Jayce.

    Link to Quest/Player Plot Comment(s):
  • During the nightmare event, did his best to brainstorm a solution despite his lack of magical ability. He offered what theoretical knowledge he had, and also ran mundane errands for the more magically inclined who were hard at work.
  • Used one of his day passes to make a trip to Borrel, where he asked around about the queen's trip and observed the naval activity there. (This is also referenced here.)
  • Purchased some books from Dragon's Keep for Urianger's edification.
  • Moved into a small space in Thorne's castle town with Urianger, vacating the castle's quarters for the Summoned. (Referenced here.)
  • Attended the Nocwich gathering for the entire week, including the Nightbloom celebration. Completed the assignment, but for Solvunn rather than Thorne. (He did attempt to be stealthy about this, however, so it was potentially not noticed...)

    Link to Quest/Player Plot Comment(s): Jayce took part in a search and rescue mission, he made a whole lot of helpful tools for rescue/relief workers that I asked you about, it's also mentioned there he helped Nadine make the care packages and it's mentioned officially here as well, and he was a healer/medic/relief worker in Libertas. Character Name: Kyle
    Faction: Thorne
    Requested Rank: 2 or 3?
    Link to Quest/Player Plot Comment(s):
    -Attended the Nocwich ceremonies. He completed the Thorne assignment solo, so I only have a reference of asking for Lucifer's advice on what to do, and then distracting a rival faction member from completing their own assignment, if that works!
    -Is a semi-fixture in the library doing research on Abraxan history.
    -Participated in Thorne's quest this month putting out the fires
    -Did some extra help around the farmlands with Jack, sorting through the burned areas and digging holes for dead livestock. Fought off some outrices that were driven from the forest. Full open prompt is here, which also includes him assisting NPCs and handing out his Goodberries for anyone brave enough to try them. Made his way into the city of Nott after he was done working to catch bits and pieces of conversation, explored the streets a bit and got mugged one night (these were open prompt options that didn't end up getting threaded, but I wanted to keep them as canon if possible)
    -Assisted with inventory at Castle Thorne in the wake of the attacks
    -Visited the Horizon Singularity to pray to his own god, Parfir.
    -Approached Yennifer about lessons in practicing magic (with the partial ulterior motive of figuring out protection spells in order to bypass them)
    -Largely handwaved, so I don't know if this counts, but while speaking with Julie about her time in Nott, he offered to pass along a message to Polly the inkeeper's wife at Hare & Harrow. He considered slipping a note to her secretly, but in the end would have approached her and explained that he spoke to Julie at Nocwich to avoid suspicion of Horizon Domain brain magic

    Character Name: Jo Harvelle
    Requested Rank: 2? or 3?
    Link to Quest/Player Plot Comment(s):

    Jo's whole focus in Caden's (originally something like kick the dirt for two months until she could hunt) revolutionized with the bombing of Libertas, first she spent the time while the gates were closed making care packages with Nadine, and, since they opened she's spent almost all of her time in Libertas this month. She went out first with her Quest Team of Dean, Nadine, and Jayce; and then continued going out without stopping, which she's still doing at this point going into October.

    Jo spent the rest of the weeks since helping find those alive, bringing out bodies for identification/return to families, clearing rubble, and guarding other groups against looters. Every morning she stops into Nadine's shop first to get new supplies to take to the front, and in the evening, she finds herself helping other exhausted Libertas Search & Rescue people. (Libertas References: Quest, Geralt, Nadine, Jack, Matt, Dean, Dean 2)

    Continuing on the path of learning to be a hunter Abraxas' Style (and relatedly on the path of her Horizon Gain Power toward Bladesinging work), Jo now has two Sword Master Mentors, Ciri, who Dean requested to teach her and, Altaïr, who adopted her via finding her outside Mag's practicing her forms. In what little time she's back in Cadens, she is outside being taught by either of her teachers or alone to continue practicing). (Both are referenced here, too.)

    -Has a regular table at the Winking Cauldron trying out Mildred's experimental teas as her guinea pig (in order to get free tea): one, two

    -Participated in the Lunar Pond ceremony. More behind-the-scenes so not sure how much it counts, but completed his assignment and overall offered encouragement for Thorne Summoned to do the task at Nocwich; additionally pressured Kyle to do the same. Tried (and failed) to interfere with Ciri's assignment.

    -Aided in the Inferno quest alongside Kell, Rhy, and Wilhelm.

    -Helping alongside Istredd at reinforcing wards.

    Character Name: Dean Winchester
    Faction: Free Cities
    Requested Rank: 3 or whatever feels appropriate
    Link to Quest/Player Plot Comment(s):

    It's been a while, and Dean's done a few things that might have gained some notice Around.

    -He consistently takes contracts from merchants, civilians, or whomstever to handle any monster problems the guard is too budy to take on.
    example one
    example two

    -He got a little excessive and put in a frankly concerning assload of time into the search and rescue missions and general cleanup / aid efforts in Libertas throughout the month.
    example one
    example two wherein people may have noticed he almost died in one of the fires.

    -He spent a week handing out free tattoos in the tavern area of Mag's to anyone who queued up
    top level; there were a buttload

    -IDK if city officials would have noticed this, but he didn't follow instructions and also did not return the Nocwich bug
    example one

    Character Name: Jack Townsend
    Faction: Thorne
    Requested Rank: 1 or 2, or whatever you think is best if any at all!
    Link to Quest/Player Plot Comment(s):

    He completed the Nocwich card request thingy here, and helped another member of Thorne do the same.
    Participated in the faction quest with the rain spell here — though it might have been noticable that instead of regular rain he accidentally made it downpour non-flammable cheap gas station bum-wine.
    He went to help clean up the burnt farmlands of Nott after the fires were all out here. They were attacked by a bunch of outrice and he told the concerned farmers that birds murdered Kyle's entire family so he essentially became a bird-killing ninja specialist.
    He can be found sleepwalking through the castle at all hours of the night here.
    Annnd he's got a job shelving books in one of Thorne's libraries, so he can be seen there all the time mentioned here.
