QUESTS ◎

Quests
Quests are specific activities taken up by player characters in-game to accomplish pre-determined tasks. Tier 1 quests are available to all players while Tier 2 quests may require some influence rank to participate. They're a great way to set your character on a certain course and gain insight into the world.

Review the quest participation information before signing up.
Quest Participation Information
How many quests can I take on?
You can take on a total of one Tier 1 quest and one Tier 2 quest per cycle.
What are quest tiers?
There are two quest tiers: Tier 1 and Tier 2. Tier 1 quests are unlimited and have no restrictions while Tier 2 are limited and will have an Influence Rank restriction, typically of at least Rank 2.

Tier 1 Tier 2
Difficulty Easy. Success hinges on turning in the quest by the allotted time. High. Success mainly hinges on turning in the quest by the allotted time but requires more planning and mod feedback.
Mod Involvement None. Information on any NPCs facilitating quests will be provided in the quest's description, but the rest is up to you! Minimal to some. Specific NPC interactions can be hashed out OOCly with the quest mod, and while we will not be directly tagging your threads, responses to player actions will be provided.
Group Size 1-4 2-4*
Slots Unlimited 1-3*
* May be adjusted if deemed necessary for the task or plot.
How often are quests available?
Quests are provided every other "off" month that does not have a game-wide event. Depending on event planning and other circumstances, some quest cycles may be skipped. We'll announce it if this is the case.

Quest cycles will follow the schedule below:
5th of quest month: Quest information is posted for viewing.
10th of quest month: Quest sign-ups are open 12:01 AM ET.
17th of quest month: Quest sign-ups are closed 11:59 PM ET.
We'll announce the opening and closure of quest sign-ups on the day of, but we will not announce it down to the minute as we do with applications and reserves. Please make sure your comment falls within the acceptable timestamp.
How do I sign up for a quest?
To sign up for a quest, fill out the form provided and comment under the applicable heading.
Tier 1: Only one person needs to sign up for the group. You can also sign up solo if you want.

Tier 2: Individual team members will need to submit their own form under the applicable team heading. This will allow us to customize information and rewards for participants. Each team will count as one slot. We'll post the "Teams" as a comment ahead of time. Players will simply need to reply under the team consisting of group members they want to team up with.
See the example sign-up thread.
How long do I have to begin the quest?
Tier 1 quests can be started any time. As long as the thread is completed by the deadline, you'll receive your reward. However, please keep your teammates in mind and make sure you're appropriately available to progress the thread.

Tier 2 quests must have a comment from you within 7 days after a mod approves the quest sign-up. If you're a day or so late, we won't be strict about it. Mostly, this is to allow both the mods and your teammates to check in and make sure everyone is available to begin the quest and complete it. Because Tier 2 quests are limited in slots, if it appears the team or a player is unable to begin the quest on time, we may decide to open up the slot to another team or player.
How do I complete a quest?
Once you've signed up for a quest, we'll approve it. The group can then begin to thread. Once the thread has reached a conclusion on or before the due date, reply to your original comment with the link to the thread. A mod will respond to confirm completion. At that stage, you may assume your character receives the specified reward on the Quest information.
What do I get for completing a quest?
Completing a quest can gain you any number of the following, depending on the specifics of the quest, territories, and NPCs involved, as well as difficulty:

  • An increase to increase your character's influence with their territory.
  • Territory lore and/or game metaplot information.
  • Unique items or abilities.
Rewards will be specified under the "Reward" section of the Quest information.
Can I fail a quest?
Yes, it is possible! If the main plot elements of the quest thread (backthreading for flavor is acceptable) are not completed by the deadline, then the quest has failed. There are also opportunities to fail a completed quest ICly due to character choices, but those will only be in Tier 2. In these instances, failure will be based on player responses to mod questions or with a direct NPC thread. Failure is not necessarily bad! You may gain new insight and lore even if you don't complete the objective and it can lead to new character development opportunities.
I may not complete my quest on time and I don't want to fail! Can I ask for an extension?
If you have any concerns about the timeline for your quest, please contact the mods for extenuating circumstances before the quest deadline, if possible. While we ask that players do their best to make sure they can actively participate when signing up, we understand the unexpected can happen.
I see a quest I like but my character may not feasibly go for. What do I do?
Some quests may be taken on by multiple players, so teaming up with another character who may be more inclined to take on that task would be a good place to start. Depending on the nature of the quest, you may also be approached by an NPC (assumed or otherwise) for the task.
How many people can form a group for a quest?
Typically, each team for a Tier 1 quest will consist of 1-4 members while Tier 2 quests will consist of 2-4 members. If there are any exceptions, they'll be noted in the quest information itself.
How do solo quests work?
Performing a quest solo will carry the same criteria as performing it with a team. You'll still need to submit a thread or log for proof of progress, but you won't need to play it out with a predesignated group. Instead, you can write an open top level or log where other characters (whether they're participating in the quest themselves or not) can interact with your character while they go about their task.

For completion, there should be at least one tag or thread written that includes the character "ending" the quest, if this is applicable. Characters who tag into a quester's log or thread will not receive quest rewards unless they have also signed up for the quest separately. Two solo questers can "team up" without formally submitting themselves as a team. Just be sure to submit your thread completion separately, as well!
What happens if a group signs up for a quest but a character is unable to participate or idles?
When you sign up for a quest you are agreeing to complete it. However, we will not punish members of a group for the inactivity of another player. Mods reserve the right to give inactive characters IC consequences and remove them from the quest thread if necessary. Please do not hesitate to reach out to us if you feel you're unable to complete a quest due to circumstances beyond your control and you have already tried addressing the issue on your own.

Tier 1 Quests

Thorne ◎ Child's Play ◎ Tier 1

Location: Castle Thorne & Nott
Requirements: None
Slots: Unlimited
Group Size: 1-4 individuals per group
Quest Giver: Shopkeepers, Parents, and Teachers around Thorne
Reward: 2 gold
Due Date: End of October Activity Check period

With the recent upheaval of the monarchy and the attack on Borrel, Thorne is looking forward to the familiar traditions of Eifstide. But as the season begins to change, so does the atmosphere amongst the youngest in the kingdom.

  • Task 1: The Eifstide doll trade is popular amongst shopkeepers and some prepare for it months ahead of time. The style of the doll changes year to year, with the capital city having the most fashionable of all. This year, as the stores begin to display their wares, they find their stock of dolls dwindling without selling a single one. Dolls continue to disappear after hours from store windows and market stalls. Even families are reporting that their dolls from previous years have gone missing. Moreover, there are rumors that the dolls themselves have decided to leave.

You are tasked to locate the missing dolls and return them to their correct shops and families. Each doll will have a description and can be found in any number of places: in gardens, under houses, in the butcher's shop, hanging from the hangman's noose, and more. Though many dolls can be returned in good condition, others might be tarnished beyond repair. Some may have their "blessings" leaking out, often candy but all with a note in a strangely familiar handwriting that none can truly recognize: RETURN.

  • Task 2: Schools in Castle Thorne and Nott are reporting issues with their classes. Typically well-behaved children act out in class by speaking in strange voices or mischievously using spells to make their supplies glow or set the desks on fire. Others refuse to put down their beloved Eifstide dolls to pay attention to any coursework. Time normally spent playing outdoors is instead spent standing in circles around one child or one doll. Since they won't listen to reason, the teachers turn to you.

Children need to be escorted to and from school as they become easily distracted. The ones acting more strangely might need to have their dolls taken away completely. They will resist, worrying about the fate of their doll over their own well-being. Some children may be calmed with mere words while others will need magical intervention to break the spell they are under. Regardless of the process, the children will whisper endlessly in incoherent mumblings and have no recollection afterward.

Players can make up the names of Thorean NPCs that help them and the appearances and personalities of the horses they encounter. Dolls are typically handwoven but those of nobility might be made of rarer materials or porcelain. Players can participate in both tasks if they would like. Rewards will not change if more than one task is taken.

If your character is inclined to investigate something beyond the described tasks, such as questioning witnesses or observing other aspects, let us know when signing up so we can provide you with the necessary details!

Free Cities ◎ House of Wax ◎ Tier 1

Location: Cadens
Requirements: None
Slots: Unlimited
Group Size: 1-4 individuals per group
Quest Giver: Muesem Staff & University Staff
Reward: 2 gold
Due Date: End of October Activity Check period

After the chaos that's ensnared the Free Cities the past month, a party is exactly what the citizens of Cadens want. But as they begin to plan the yearly festivities, things start to go awry.

  • Task 1: The Hassan-Muller Collection is a popular museum in central Cadens, founded by eclectic collectors Hector Hassan and Mikael Muller. Known for showing off the strange and mysterious, including failed antique inventions and occult paraphernalia, it's a popular attraction during the Eifstide season. Locals often donate family items to the museum for decades to add to the chaotic ambiance. This Eifstide, the museum is hosting wax figures from Libertas that depict renowned historical and legendary figures from Free Cities history.

The exhibit runs as expected during the day. However, at night, security reports unexplained activity. Ancient spirit boards glow and vibrate. When staff walks by, they hear their names in voices reminiscent of departed loved ones. The wax figures themselves seem to move, but never when someone is looking at them. They change into new positions and disappear from their displays. When the lights are off, whispers echo through the hallways. Perturbed, the museum staff reaches out to the Summoned for help. You will be tasked with binding the spirit boards using a small New Magic sealing device, documenting any sounds on miniature gramophone recorders, and returning wax figures to their displays. How you do this is entirely up to you, but they ask that you don't damage any items.

  • Task 2: Newly crafted spirit boards are popular this time of year and are flying off the shelves in the markets, sometimes literally. But a party near the Academy is a particular cause for concern. After a "successful" seance, one spirit board that's been in the family for generations has suddenly gone missing. Its owner, a young woman named Fia, says that it left her bag overnight and claims that ever since, nothing has gone right. Lights and lanterns flicker out, windows burst open during classes, chemicals boil and freeze at random, and even the normally solid stone floors seem to creak with every footstep. Others say they hear voices at night. The voices can be more benign, like professors berating them, or they can be frightening threats.

With students and scientists in disarray, the Summoned are asked to lend a hand. Most aren't superstitious, but a few mention seeing pieces of wood that look like they might belong to the missing spirit board. More spiritual believers say a broken spirit board weakens the veil between life and death, making the Academy vulnerable to influences. Out of options, exasperated professors will suggest it won't hurt if you find the missing pieces and put the board back together. Pieces can be found nearly anywhere around the Academy, including areas accessible only with permission. By working together, the pieces can all be found. Once completed, the board will spell out "Thank You."

Players can make up the names of NPCs that they encounter on either task. Players can participate in both tasks if they would like. Rewards will not change if more than one task is taken.

If your character is inclined to investigate something beyond the described tasks, such as questioning witnesses or observing other aspects, let us know when signing up so we can provide you with the necessary details!

Solvunn ◎ Silence of the Goats ◎ Tier 1

Location: All Settlements
Requirements: None
Slots: Unlimited
Group Size: 1-4 individuals per group
Quest Giver: Commune Elders
Reward: 2 gold
Due Date: End of October Activity Check period

INTRO

  • Task 1: Making masks is a siginficant part of Eifstide. For children, the masks are often linen or wool, then decorated with wood, leaves, and stone from the forests, or leather and fabrics. The look of each mask is unique. Though tradition dictates that the masks can only be worn at night during the Eifstide week, children and adults alike are suddenly compelled to break that tradition.

Looking at someone wearing a mask against tradition may cause dizziness and malaise. Animals back away or whine and moan if they come too close. At first, the Elders wait to see if this is a new sign from the Gods, but soon realize something else may be happening. They believe that since the Summoned are revered, locals will listen to them more easily. They want you to persuade mask-wearers to take off the masks and hand them over to be displayed rather than worn and to encourage them to make new masks, maybe of different materials. Despite trusting the Summoned, mask-wearers will be reluctant to remove them and will need to be persuaded. Some may become aggressive if pushed too far, though physical conflict should be avoided wherever possible. Confiscated masks must be turned in to the Council Elders.

  • Task 2: While the townsfolk make their own masks each year, the Head of the Council wears an ancient mask for the final night of Eifstide. This will be Rowan March’s first year leading the ceremony. In his preparations, he discovers that the sacred mask has gone missing. To keep panic at a minimum, commune Elders are on the lookout. At the same time, there are sightings of a Lyhos Kesc that has come from the woods to prowl the Primary Settlement. This alone would be troubling due to the effects its presence brings, but this Lyhos Kesc seems to be wearing the sacred mask.

No one can fathom how it got its hooves on it, but they must get it back. The Summoned are asked to assist, especially with a local population already on edge. Lyhos Kesc's presence can be deduced by feelings of unease in townsfolk or by speaking to children who find it frequently peering at them from behind trees and hedges, never making a sound. Elders and commune members want no harm to come to the creature. Instead, they request that the Summoned place offerings in hopes it will agree to exchange the mask for something else. Offerings might include other masks, food, toys, or any number of creative items that a walking goat might enjoy. Offerings can be left at sightings or in front of the Lyhos Kesc itself. The latter comes with the risk of falling under the effects of its presence, so it's important to bring a friend. After receiving a substantial amount of gifts, the Lyhos Kesc will finally relinquish the mask at the end of the month.

Players can make up the names of NPCs they encounter. Players can participate in both tasks if they would like. Rewards will not change if more than one task is taken.

If your character is inclined to investigate something beyond the described tasks, such as questioning witnesses or observing other aspects, let us know when signing up so we can provide you with the necessary details!
